I have a 4.5 S V8 for the past four years. It now has 70k on it of which I did 30k. I get best 22 mpg and round town 16mpg. Mine is one of the 2 % made manuals. I'm told the V6 is just as thirsty as my V8. Comfort, handling and everything else is very good. Tyres last 12k miles back, 15 k front or better. Mine are Pirelli P Zero and Iv also used Contis and Bridgestones. I ve a spare set of rims andwill use winter tyres this year for first time. I have the Porsche Extended Warranty and use my OPC for Service, it's every two years so not bad. I also use it to tow my race shuttle, and it's supperb for this but mpg drops to 16.7. HTH

Hello All,

I am thinking seriously about purchasing a Cayenne for our family car. I have a few questions and who better to ask than current owners.

1. What are yearly running costs, I ususally do around 6000 to 9000 miles a year.
2. I'm looking at a 3.2, what are fuel costs like and what sort of MPG am i looking to achieve. I know they are heavy on fuel but just how heavy.
3. Overall opinion, comfort, space, quality, power etc.
4. Insurance - I am 42 with full no claims and have been quoted £710 so far.

Anything i should look out for would also be appreciated.

I appreciate people are busy so thank you in advance for your time.

Regards
Dave

had a gen1 turbo, now have a gen3 hybrid. I test drove (at least a week) for all the gen1 models; as far as fuel goes, I managed 1mpg difference per model ! Hence I bought a Turbo... much better specced as std, i.e. Air suspension etc Gen3 KN's are miles ahead in dynamics, handling & economy, but at a price ($) If you do buy a gen 1/2 V8 make sure it has had the plastic coolant pipes replaced - common fault

Dave, 1 – If you’re worried about fuel usage then look elsewhere. Other costs: tyres CAN last 12k, coils and plugs (not a service item) replace at best after 5 years (£400+), battery lasts say 6 years. Servicing is every two years and fixed price, so far hasn’t cost me much more than advertised price. 2 – Other than a small fuel saving I can’t see any benefit of the V6. 3 – Fantastic on all fronts. Feels very solid, very comfortable; you can drive all day and won’t feel like you have. Quiet at high speed and even when fully loaded has plenty of power. Spring suspension is a hard ride, you do notice the bumps, but not it’s not uncomfortable and if you’re used to other Porkers you’ll find it very comfortable. Ever tried go fast around even slight bends in a ‘Sport’ Range Rover? If so you’ll appreciate the KNs stability, you can chuck it around without the seesawing. 4 – Insurance is a bit more than my 993 was, it’s in the same region as you say. I found with the KN that specialists were more (by a lot) expensive than the normal high street places. If you need the space for the family go for it! That’s why I got it and it’s the only car I need, carries everything (and everyone) drives like a sports car and has more toys and comfort than you’ll need. Nothing else does what it does as well as it does. Good luck, Swiftus

Thanks very much for all your replies. The car I am going to see tomorrow is this on at OPC Wilmslow. http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/uk/clients.show_car?sid_=47220085JJLKPP3B3JK31LQ0IVMEEAB&pnr_=1&lnr_=1&caller_= Looks a good price and its a manual that i really wanted.

Link doesn't work, but if its the 06/04 on 51K miles for £10691.00 with 2 Years warranty, it's an absolute steal..... Good luck....

Gutted, it turns out the car was put on the Porsche GB website by mistake and wasn't a Porsche approved used car. Its now going to be put up for £13000 with a 3 months warranty. Thanks for everyone's help, I appreciate it. Dave

I am also looking for a Cayenne Is there much difference between an 2003 and a 2006 gen 1 car? I am an absolute spec junkie, so its taking a long time to find the right car, I have seen a 2006 that I like, but it has covered 80k miles. The main features that I want are: Automatic, Xenons, Bose, Heated electric seats, sunroof, parking sensor and sat nav. I am undecided on air suspension, is it a must have or a nice to have? Is 80k a lot or a worry on a Cayenne? I would like to buy from an OPC, but there are so very few Gen 1 in the dealer network at the moment.

Hi Tan You've been looking for a long time haven't you? Seem to remember you asking similar questions last year. My current 2006 Gen 2 Cayenne S has a spec as per the one above, and with nearly 80k miles runs perfectly. It's had warranty from day 1 with no major issues at all (crosses fingers). This one has air suspension and would recommend that system compared with steel which we had on the Gen 1. Unlikely that you'll find a Gen1 car on the OPC network, in fact the oldest I've can see on PH is a 2007 Turbo, and the others are 2009 onwards. A well cared for private car with extended manufacturers warranty still running would be my choice.

Thanks It has been a long time, but I did have a break in the middle where I had decided to keep my current car. Changing my car is somewhat of an itch that I just have to scratch, but as there is no issues with my current car and it has Mercedes warranty, its a tough decision. There is one car at an OPC at the moment, but its not the spec that I want, so I am very torn about what to do. Tan

I think the Air Suspension is a nice to have rather than a must have, unless you have a specific need for it (eg extra low setting for easier luggage / big dog loading). We had a Gen 1 V6 with Air Sus- had problems with it that were not totally resolved under warranty. Our Gen 2 Diesel was 'normal suspension' and we do not really miss the Air Susp. BTW I think the Diesel (if fuel econony is important) or the V8 are better options than the V6.

Hi I have finally done it, I collected a Cayenne last Saturday. After many months of searching, I bought an '04 Cayenne, Black with Black Being a self confessed spec junkie, I looked at many cars and tried to decide which toys were an absolute must and which I could live without, the latter list was much shorter than the former. In the end the compromise came in the engine department as I went for a V6 rather than the glorious V8, still not sure that was the right thing to do, as I miss the power and the smoothness. The options that I do have are: Sat Nav, Sunroof, parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring, electric seats with memory, electric steering column, heated seats front and rear, heated steering wheel, multi function steering wheel, tiptronic, xenons and air suspension. Two options that it does not have, but are easy mods are Cruise control (the parts arrived before the car did) and roof rails which I am on the look out for. I really miss keyless go, so will investigate if Porsche Drive and Go is a viable mod to have fitted. Many thanks for all the help and advice I received along the way. Regards Tan

Hi Tan Iam thinking of retro fitting cruise control what price have you manged to get it for and where from ? Thanks Paul

I know of a guy that does it and he is mobile and very reasonable . Seems to quote around £500 all in

I'd like cruise fitted to mine. Advise on type/cost and where to get it done? Good luck with your new piggy btw!!

Hi Paul So far all I have bought is the cruise control switch, which i got for £50 from a breakers, I now need to order a cable about £8 at the dealer and some screws. I don't know how much the labour to fit it will be, but hoping it won't be more than £100.
ORIGINAL: paulseagrave Hi Tan Iam thinking of retro fitting cruise control what price have you manged to get it for and where from ? Thanks Paul

Message Body Hi Kevin Yes we can fit cruise control to your vehicle; we will use the new AP900 electronic cruise control with user settable multi-speed limiter. The cost would be £495.99 fitted + vat at your home or work, it normally takes about 4 hours to fit. If you have any further questions or would like to book an appointment please call me on 077722 80057 Thanks Brian www.carfi.co.uk sales@carfi.co.uk

£500 seams a little steep to me for an aftermarket system, when you can have it fitted at an OPC for £450

With due respect Tan I think it is difficult to get an OPC to get out of bed for £500 ! If that is a firm price i would book it . The quote i mentioned was not for a Kn at a guess i would think that would be more . Good Luck
