Hi,

After having my 944s2 and my 968 trackcar i find myself being drawn towards a 911 as a "weekend car" (The 968 is way too stiff to enjoy on the roads)

I used to have a 964 but have always wanted ... no 'lusted' over a 3.2. The proper shape and the proper noise.

I'm after a bit of advice in terms of real world useability... Some of the cars I've been looking at predate things like "unleaded" petrol.. so am i going to be buying fuel additives for ever?
Are the wheels a less popular size? is there still a decent choice out there or does only one manufacturer make them and charge an arm and a leg?

Is there anything I should be looking out for in a car, aside from the usual with buying a used porsche?
Any options to look out for and more importantly avoid?

Thanks in advance

Lali

Greetings
I use my '85 3.2 daily come rain, hail, sun, plague of locusts, meteor shower, and wind (not mine!). And apart from the alternator committing suicide on the way to work one morning, the car has been is bullet proof in the four years that I've had her [:D]
Tyre sizes aren't an issue, loads of choice and petrol, well I use 95 or, if I feel rich, 98 octane works a treat[:)] Haven't used any additives yet!
As they say in all the publications buy wisely and have an inspection done. Could save you squillions.
I don't know where your based but if your anywhere near me ie NW London, email me for a chat etc. blah blah.
Would I buy another 3.2 knowing then (2004) what I know now YES in fact I would buy two[:-] (poor boy.ed.)
Good luck
Alex

I can only echo the above, but I had a 3.2 Targa for 10 years until the lure of the 993 got me, which I'm now in the 2nd year of ownership. The 3.2 was a fantastic car, I even took it on alpine trips fitted with a factory supplied ski rack (yes on a targa!) The 3.2 runs perfectly happily on unleaded with the nikasil hardened cylinders but I used to fill mine with 100 octane leaded now and again to give it a special treat (and me) Leaded is still available in the UK at a few specialist places.
Again always try to get the absolute best you can find and its well worth having a proper inspection carried out by Peter Morgan or similar, that alone could save you a fortune.
One last thing when I bought my 3.2 12 years ago I paid £12999 for it. When I sold it to buy my 993 C4 I got £12999 for it. not bad eh!

Enjoy

I'm pretty sure SCs and earlier run on unleaded so all 3.2s are fine. Later ones have the G50 gearbox which has a more conventional shift and a hydraulic clutch, but not the essential must have. Check for Rust, Rust and more Rust. Kidney Bowls, B posts, front pan and wishbone mounts, rear wings, windscreen surrounds, Front wings by the headlights and along the top of the inner wings. Bumpers can bubble being Ali .

Heat exhanger and exhausts can rust and are very expensive to replace. Calipers can seize - but should be spotted if it pulls up in a straight line or not. Check heater works, and turns off again - engine bay valves can stick open heating the cabin all the time, and the fresh air fan can burn out - not pleasant on a warm day. Replacment is easy and cheap(ish) of these.

Fuchs wheels are expensive, so is refurb so finding some in good condition on the car is a bonus. Wider sizes can demand a fortune (8/9")

They will stand up to being used every day no problem, mine is a daily driver. You have to keep in mind they do prefer being pampered a bit more than a modern car to keep things like rust at bay - no arch liners means the crud can build up in hard to reach places.

Have a look over on www.impactbumpers.com - loads of info over there.

Find a good one and try it, you'll love it ;)
