POWER CHIPS

PH

New member
Hello all

Has any one had any experience of the various power chips for 964's, only asking because on E bay I have seen an ACCELL RACING chip which claims marvellous results, 20 bhp for £75.00.
Being a cynical & tight Yorkshire man this seems too good to be true, but also too good a deal to ignore!
Any recommendations of other chips that do what they claim?

Cheers

Paul

PS Best chips are usually fried in lard, but they make you fat which slows the car down.

Paul,

I'm sure you will get a lot of opinions on this one. The question comes up time and again - and there seems no real answer.

I've seen mention on the Accell Racing chip on Rennlist - it apparently doesn't work on Tiptronic cars - but some have said the result was good. I'd be dubious that ANY chip can give you 20bhp but it's likely that it WILL improve the driveability and smooth the power delivery somewhat. I have a ProMax chip in my car which DID make it considerably smoother (£149 from ProMax) but it is reliant on using RON98 fuels (Optimax) and does also benefit from freer flowing air filters (K&N) and exhaust.

Off the shelf chips are always a compromise based on what the engine SHOULD be like and may well give better results on one car compared to another. The only way to be sure you're getting the most out of YOUR car is to have a live re-map done on a rolling road at somewhere like Ninemeister or Weltmeister. This is usually around the £500 mark so it makes the Accell Racing chip look pretty cheap - but don't expect the results to be anywhere close.

Regards

Dave

Thanks for your advice Dave.

I think that I would be better off going for the Pro-max chip, is it something that can be installed on a DIY basis, or does it require proffesional installation?

It`s not a hard job to do you only need to remove the passenger seat to get at the DME control module open it up and pop out the old chip and pop back in the new chip taking all the same precautions you would do working on any computer chip
Changed the one on my 3.2 in about 1/2hour

In addition to what Dave has said-chip's are rarely used alone to improve performance-often than not they will be used in conjunction with
(a) Exhaust modifications - cat bypass/Cup/G pipe variants
(b) Airbox modifications i.e. drilling to improve air intake, but the general consensus here is that it perhaps improves breathing at the top end, but it's greatest contribution is the addional growl rather than a measurable power increase grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
(c) Hot film conversion aka 993 -
(d) Modifications to the fuel injection system etc
(e) 98 RON fuel: I've yet to see theevidence which catagorically proves that higher octane fuels used in a standard car make it any quicker. Like most 911's the noticeable gains are seen on cold damp mornings/evenings.....

In my humble opinion - if you have the cash to splash and the 964 is what you want to do it with - within the UK Ninemeister have an interesting and variable tuning programme...that includes many bespoke approaches and items that deal with the bottlenecks in the fuel/air delivery system
