Power Hood

Hi, is there any general or preventive maintenance for the power hood mechanism.

Any replies appreciated. Boxster 987

None that I know of. The biggest problem is the tension: it must be kept equal, but that is a job I think for an OPC.

What is important is the care of the hood and, more importantly, the care of the perspex window if the have an older version. Do not raise/lower it this weather. Keep it clean. If you have a hard top in place, raise the fabric hood a few times in winter if the weather is not too cold. Make sure when you do lower the hood that the perspex window folds neatly (if necessary, stop half way and use the side of your hand).

Rear window is glass on this 2006 Box but was wondering if a light oil or WD could be applied to any areas within the mechanism to keep operation smooth'

Ian, I'm not sure. Use of oil can attract dirt and hence subsequent problems. When was the Boxster last serviced & by whom? The hood mechanism should not need attention between proper services unless one get odd noises or it fails to go up & down. If you are worried, why not pop into your nearest OPC and ask them.

On a diferent note, I see that you are new to this forum and a guest of the Club. Why not join? You will get the best monthly magazine available, totally free of charge and 10% off OPC servicing. More importantly, meet great like minded blokes and be able to attend a vast and varied amount of Porsche events.

There's not really anything to oil. Yours is a fairly new car, and I've not really heard of any failures due to bad lubrication on ANY Boxsters.
What can happen on a glass-windowed roof? The drive cables can break - they work a bit like those that drive windscreen wipers, and if one breaks the hood will start to raise/lower crooked - if this happens DO NOT use the motor to continue raising/lowering, it will twist the frame and that's going to be expensive... But this isn't exactly common either!
Everything else is just wear and tear - tension cables detaching or breaking, cloth wear, cosmetic waterproofing.

Don't worry about it and drive it

Grease all the mechanical joints with PTFE grease from Maplins and lubricate the rubber seals with Gumiphledge (available form BMW dealers or fleabay.)
