The rules are simple-ish, but generator power is dirty, so Im not sure how well you can weld using it. Generators whith a sufficiently high output and a clean output sine will be extremely expensive. You can use a sine inverter, sometimes called a 'smoother' or 'smooth unit, but Im not sure about their cost.

Look at the plate on the welder: it will have to state its peak load and will say something like 1,800 Watts, or 1.8 KiloWatts.

Because electrical equipment can take double its rated current upon start-up, you are now looking for a generator rated at 3,600 Watts, or 3. 6KiloWatts at the absolute minimum.

Just to make it a little harder, generators are rated in KVA. Roughly, 1KVA = 0.8KW (so 2.4KVA = 1.92KW & 3KVA = 2.4KW etc). http://www.dieselservicea...alculator.aspx#kvatokw
