power loss

Hi all
My 964 has developed a power loss problem.
It starts up okay pulls away then the engine tone alters the revs drop and it cuts out. Wait a few second start it up, pull off all okay the engine picks up then suddenly the engine dies again and cuts out. Last night it happened about 10 times in the space of going out to limping it back home, about 2 miles, resulting in petrol fumes entering the cabin.
I immediately got out and checked the engine, while the cabin vented, but could smell no petrol / fumes at all. Once the cabin cleared I restarted the car, at the third attempt, which is unusual since it normally starts first time, and limped it home.
The cabin fumes might have been as a result all the starting up? but am at a loss re the loss of power. Fuel pump, fuel line etc any one got any ideas and where to start first.

Craig,

I think this is likely to be a difficult one to tie down - if only because there are countless potential causes of such phenomenon.

It may be worth trying the DME relay - they are well known for giving problems and they are fairly cheap (£20) to replace. I suspect the fuel smell is just due to repeated attempts to start the engine without it firing, so it's dumping the unburnt fuel through the exhaust.

If the DME relay doesn't crack it I'd be tempted to get the car booked in to one of the reputable independants who can give it a thorough going over. If you start the slippery slope of buying replacement parts based on guesswork you're likely to end up with an empty wallet and not much else!!!

The 964 has a number of sensors which input data to the DME (the engine management controller - not the relay) and it's the DME which controls the fueling and ignition. If any one of these sensors is "off" it's likely that the engine will not start or run correctly.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

Craig,
As well as the DME relay as Dave points out check the Alarm ZV Steuergerat (928 618 260 xxx) - this piece of equipment is central to the electrics. It is located under the Driver's seat, up against the centre tunnel. It is held in with two screws and there are two connector blocks. Check for a smell of electrical burning. These are a common problem on 964s.
Cheers,

Many Thanks Dave and Fred

Have new DME to try, one small point where is it located and secondly where is the fuel pump located, you've guessed it I don't have a workshop manual.
I want to make sure the pump is doing it's jobas well.

Thanks for the advise. All information gratefully accepted.

Craig,
Have you got a new DME or a DME relay. If it is the relay it is situated in the main fuse /relay box under the front bonnet directly in front of the driver's seat (RHD). I dont have any pictures of it's exact location but it will probably have 944 as the first three numbers on the part number, your new one will start with 993. Its relay R41. The Digital Motor Electronics (DME) control box itself is under the passenger seat (RHD).[:)]
Cheers,

Hi Fred / David
Replace DME (993 VERSION) with a 944 which I had as a running spare, The engine seems to run at a staedy 900 /1000 rpm on start up. As yet have not driven it on road untilI have cover from one of my sons just in case it went down on me again. Will try it out tonight. As a matter of info where abouts is the fuel pump just in case this is the problem area.
