Power Steering Cooling Pipes

Morning All!
My car sprung a new leak last weekend - turns out to be the power steering cooling pipes. Ive never heard of such a thing and the guy i spoke to who mostly deals with Ferraris and Lambos hasn't either! Is the entire length of pipe needed for something? I was thinking of replacing it with something a little smaller (and considerably cheaper)

The cooler is just a geometric coil of metal pipe in the O/S front bumper that the pas fluid flows through. Not strictly necessary in our cooler climate and I have heard of people just bypassing it when it leaks with no problem. I had a new one fitted when mine split and it was an over £150 part if my memory serves me well.

I think I have a spare one, but unfortunately it's about 11,500 miles from me, and a good 250 miles from you as well.

You could just get Pirtek to make a flexi section that joins the two ends of the cooler together and bypass it though.

In fact it's part of the low pressure return so it doesn't even need to be that expensive.
In the past I cut out the coil and jubilee clipped a short length of appropriately sized and specced hose.
Worked quite well. Apparently the cooling is required in very hot climates, which certainly doesn't include the SW UK over the last few days!!

On the recommendation of my local independent specialist, I had the bypass done recently on my Lux. No bother at all, works fine.

Has anyone done this themselves? Im thinking about doing it one weekend just not sure how to go about it, under the wing or remove the bumper? Clarks Garage website has a guide for replacing the lot, but its not really clear

It's easiest to do it from under the front, though slightly awkward due to the reduced height.
Crude but we simply used a junior hacksaw to cut through the pipes leaving suitable lengths to attach to. (mind your eyes with the drips!)
Walked five minutes down the road to our local Auto factors (Mill autos here in Cornwall, used the removed coil to source suitable replacement tubing along with jubilee clips.
Had a pint in the local pub as we passed - well it would have been rude not to - went back and ten minutes later job done!

Might be a daft question this but i bought a 2nd hand pipe off ebay and it came with the reservoir and flexi pipe, i was thinking of doing away with the cooling pipes all together and just using the flexi-pipe to connect the reservoir to whatever the steering jobby. That should suffice shouldn't it?

Why don't you just cut out the small section with the leak.[;)] Join with flexy pipe and jubilee clips.

This wont work if the leak is near the join[]
