I simply don't get the feedback needed to give me the confidence to get the car sideways at high speed through the bends.
If i could rip my power steering out i would without a second thought.

My old LUX didn't have power steering and the feedback and feeling of control was amazing. My turbo does have it and compared to the LUX, it feels pretty numb and nowhere near as enjoyable.

exactly how my PAS equipped 944 feels after my manual 924's (thats plural, not S)
its going .. it has to, my subaru is currently nicer to drive .. and thats just wrong.

I was going to swap mine for non-PAS but the owner of the non-PAS donor didn't get his act together so I just went with a non-assisted PAS rack. Even that is fine except for parking.
whats the ratio like compared to a manual rack ?
# turns lock to lock ?
It's a pretty hard-core mod to just remove the PAS to be honest, but if you do it you need to keep the rack filled with PAS fluid and get a hose made up to connect the inlet and outlet so the fluid can move between the ends. Apparently if you just pack them with grease they seize pretty quickly.

It's the same ratio as the PAS you have, and as I haven't driven the car since 2006 you might be better than I am to comment. 3 turns maybe?
havent a clue to be honest .. only picked my 944 up last week, and have done about 50 miles in it at low speeds with knackered wheel bearings just to get it home.. and its currently in the barn on axle stands getting some much needed attention
924's are 4 turns lock to lock IIRC I know there was some talk about getting quaife(?) to do a short run of the appropriate golf quick-rack made up with the correct pinion gear to suit the 924, but i dont know if it ever happened.
connecting inlet to outlet makes sense to keep the rack happy, good to know its a potential way forward.
I'll see how she feels with new tyres/wheel bearings/discs/foo/blah before i give the PAS any more thought, but i strongly suspect it'll go, as i did love the direct feel of the 924.
