Power Steering Leaks

Yesterday the car took up smoking in the extreme. When I took a look under the bonnet I found power steering fluid had got all over the last downpipe, the bulk head end of the engine bay, and was merryily smoking. I could wipe it off some of the hoses in that area and the cam cover (?? bit with Porsche written on it).

The power steering pump has had a weep ever since I bought the car but this was a bit more extreme, so have cleaned it up but I couldn't see anything obvious. I had topped the reservoir on Sunday morning and was in a rush so I wonder if I over filled it and it has blown out of somewhere. On having a look around I found this pipe (circled in red) that looks like some kind of breather/over flow from one of the pipes coming out of the bottom of the reservoir. Could this be a reasonable cause?

I had planned to do this work on Sunday but never quite got there, I have had a couple of oil leaks, one from the oil filter and still have to replace the pressure sender, plus when I changed the oil filter I got oil everywhere, so I took the under tray off and gave everything a good clean up. During this I notice the pipe on the power steering pump, circled in the pic below. THere doesn't appear to be a clamp around this pipe, should there be?

I was also looking through the manual and noticed that the 944 should have a smooth sump and the turbo one with fins. Mine has the one with fins on, but I assume that at some point they used this on all cars.
 
hiya, had a look at ur photos. Regarding the PAS leak, if you overfill the reservoir it will come out of the top through the very small hole in fillee cap (sideways on). In addition if air gets into the system because of leaks and you hear moaning and groaning, this air will find its way up to the reservoir and force fluid outt.

ref. The pipes, the two at the bottom of the reservoir 1 = feed to the pump, the other = return from the cooler pipe located under the bumper drivers side. In ur pic of the pump, this line is the high pressure feed to the steering rack, it doesn't need hose clamps = sealed pressure line with a banjo bolt connexion to the pump.
 
[FONT=Arial"][FONT=verdana,geneva"]If it's any help you can buy new hoses from Porsche; the feed is about £30, whilst the return is about £130 (believe this is fabriacted into the cooler) - I ended up cutting about 1cm from the top of the latter hose and resealing with a new hose clip. You can also buy new seal kits for the pump for about £20 - check post in technical section for youtube vid.
 
I had a PAS leak a few years ago - turned out to be the "cooler" section of the pipework. It had corroded away so I just bined it off replaced with a bit of flexi pipe. It was a pain at first figuring out where the oil was coming from as it followed the pipework back to the pump.

just so you have a reference, looking at the first picture you sent through of the PAS reservoir (on PC not smart phone now...), the curved pipe to the RHS is the low pressure feed to the top of the PAS pump - it's held in by a 19mm banjo bolt. One option for replacement is to take the pipe to a Pirtek type hydraulics line company who will use the existing fitment and convert it to a steel braided hose.

The pipe coming from the PAS reservoir on the LHS that's straight and runs along the top of the chassis rail is the return pipe from the cooler unit.

I had a recent incident where the pump was drawing air in and cavitating - it was pumping fluid through the rack and cooler up to the reservoir but not pulling fluid down = overflow of PAS fluid all over the exhaust !
 
[FONT=Arial"][FONT=verdana,geneva"]Looking at the pics, you will also need replacement roll bar bushes. They look shot after being bathed in hydraulics, oil and grit [:-]
