Power Steering..Not!!

Ok..so my 2.7 944 has been laid up for a while.

Got it started and all seeme fine.....except the steering!!
Boy its heavy!
Got the front up on stands and wheels off.
The pump belt has tension , the reservoir is full, no foamimg.
On full lock I can here the pump strain..(as normal)

Any suggestions please?

Ive tried the bleeding technique with the reservoir open. As the engine warms the steering does improve a little.

Is it worth renewing the fluid?..I know its old.

Or a recon pump?..or a rack?..but which first?

All suggestions gratefully recieved.

Cheers in advance....... CLEMMO

What have you been driving in between and how heavy is heavy? is it similar to engine off?

will feel heavier than the bm but should feel lighter engine running. I think the noise on full lock is a pressure relief valve in the pump which if so would indicate some pressure is available. I am not an expert on power steering at all but I think there is a piston in the rack that provides the assistance - this could be the isssue if its seals have failed. Pump repair kits a re available not sure about racks - though recon racks are.
sorry cant be more help!
Tony

It might be worth having a look at the bulkhead bush/bearing that supports the steering column.

I have seen these run dry of grease, then corrode and seize up.
