Power steering pipe failure

Hi,
Just had the high pressure pipe into the steering rack spring a leak with a pin hole, hydraulic fluid everywhere underneath. Just wondered if this has happened to anyone else?
Apparently getting the pipe out of the rack as well as the low pressure pipe out successfully is very tricky as it's steel against alloy and they corrode together so it might mean a new steering rack as well! It's mounting up and this is after I had both metal steering rack pipes and both return hydraulic pipe ferrules replaced last year as a precaution.

I suppose owning a 15 year old car albeit with only 55000 on the clock things are bound to deteriorate.

Afraid so. I have had 2 996s, both have had the pipe to the rack repaired and then later one was replaced. The leaks were due to a crimp (I think) failing. Replacement of the pipe required dropping the front sub frame (4WD) as the pipe was seized into the rack and couldn't be undone without full access. Very expensive to fix. Apparently the crimp progressively fails overtime, you need to check how much of the crimp is still intact so that it can be re-crimped (botched) before it fails and leaks and you loose your steering.

I know this is late but I have posted on this site info on how I removed and repaired/refitted my steering rack after the steel pipes corroded. There is company in Coventry that will make new the steel pipes to the current design for around £30. You do need to remove the whole unit. You may also consider replacing the track rod ends after. A real pain to do if you don't have a lift but possible just about with the car on ramps. Porsche won't even contemplate a repair, £2000 was their quote to me for a replacement.

Hi there,
Does anyone have contact details for the Supplier of the Power Steering rack hydraulic pipes.
Mine are corroded and leaking on my 996 Turbo. Fluid everywhere up front on the drivers side.What a poor design, hope I can get out the rotten pipes!

Hello, one of my Power steering Pipe has a tiny weep, well it’s leaking as corroded. 2004 911 997. What’s the sequence of removal please? Do I need to remove the steering rack? its up on ramps right now. Looks like I can get to the two fittings facing the drivers side. Sequence of refitting and any bleeding necessary? Thank You

Hello couldn't find the contact details of a company in Coventry who manufacture porsche power steering pipes. Any help as it’s appears genuine ones are £274 ??. So after high pressure metal power steering pipes for 911 997 on a 2004 plate please.

Thank you for the help thus far. So RPM can make pipes thank you. Does the aluminium subframes need to be removed to get to the pipes attached to the rack please? I can see those facing me on the drivers side. It’s where they are on the rack that I cannot see. Appreciate all the help as always thank you

I had the same issue a couple of months ago and I sourced replacement pipes for 42 quid via:

They are near Coventry I believe. It is a pig of a job so it cost me just under 150 quid incl appropriately skilled labour to get it sorted properly.

Yes I believe they had to drop the subframe, its a bit of a job I gather, I left it up to them! RPM buy in the pipes, but make the rubber hose connections themselves. Hope they come out of the rack okay otherwise it's a new rack £££.
