Power Steering Pump Issues

Hi Folks
I think I have a problem with the power steering pump on my 1989 944S2 Cab. With engine running there is a noise/groan coming from the pump, with NO pressure applied to the steering wheel. If I of apply a small amount of pressure or turn the steering wheel the noise/groan will stop until I release the pressure on the steering wheel and then it will start again.
Eventually after a lot of cursing, I have managed to remove the PS pump. Previous owner/mechanic had not used the correct long support bolt. Just a but of threaded bar.

Is the pump repairable?

Any Ideas?

cheers
John

Mmm, interesting. Did you take any photos of the pump removal? I am having my own power steering woes, although my symptoms are groaning due to a lack of fluid, caused by a fluid leak, although I am not sure from where at the moment.

I believe the pumps can be rebuilt, but I am sure somebody can confirm?

You can get kits to replace the PS pump seals and i've seen them on US fleabay. The pump on my cab groaned quite loud but changing the fluid seemed to do the trick.

Sorry, I did not take any pictures of the pump removal. Fairly straightforward to get the pump off. 4 bolts. I did wonder if there was air still trapped in the system. I've bled the system as far as I can.

Has anyone tried one of these seal kits? do they work?
cheers
John

I'll let you know as I suspect I'll be using one fairly soon, unless I discover a much easier to fix fluid leak on my in.

Jon Mitchell will recon them for around 150ish & warrants them afterwards! I've reconned them in the past by getting a seal kit but it can be fiddly & you need a gauge to set them up afterwards.
Sometime a flush& refill will quieten them down.

So what do we think about this then? I pulled back the inner wheel arch and removed the lower part of the PU (the bat wing??) to have a look at the power steering pipes. As you can see below, there's quite a lot of power steering fluid over the oil cooler shown here:

Here's another shot, close up on the pipes, which shows the top of the pipes being bone dry and the bottom being darkened by leaking power steering fluid. I am presuming then that this is the source of my leak, as the pipes look a bit crusty.

Can they be repaired or is it just easier to replace?

Cheers

The cooler has corroded through, fairly common actually I know of two cars that have had this happen & the cooler ain't cheap, around 160 quid from memory.

Thanks Jim, I thought that was it.

EFA! If you do it yourself you'll need new sealing washers for the connections. And don't run it like that if the pipe lets go completely it'll trash
the PAS pump before you realise.

I've got a slight leak on my pump, and rather than replacing the pump I am goimg to get a seal kit and do it myself.... Thanks for the link to that video.[:)]
