Just moved car over to garage after previously doing belts and water pump and am going to start on new dampers etc. Anyway whilst driving car across on turning the steering wheel the ps pump was making a noise, kind like belt slip ot a dry pump (although level was fine). So ran it up onto ramps and slackened off the locknut for the adjustment bar (had put new ps belt on but guessed hadnt tensioned it enough when put car back together). Anyway the pump seemed to move a little on its bracket so nipped up the pivot mount bolt which seemed to take slack out of it, but on tightening and playing with the belt tension I noticed there is surprising amount of lateral play on shaft. I knew it was leaking but guess its prob on its way out, the movement is pretty noticable, is this a correct assumption.
Couple of queries for you all, what is acceptable in terms of play, can I just tension it up further and gamble with it, which makes me ask, does it take anything else out (in terms of other belts etc) if it breaks up whilst running. And can the ps pumps be rebuilt or am I looking at a recon or new if it is failed. Thanks for any pointers, appreciated as always, cheers
