Took the Targa out for a run Sunday before it's MOT on Monday
Checked everything, all ok so but when I can to put the car back in the garage i saw a brown looking puddle where the front N/S wheel was!!!
Power Steering Fluid!!
Jacked it up and could see it was wet underneath, so took the wheel off to have a better look. Could see inside but everything looked ok, so un did a couple of the screws holding the plastic cover just to try and see the rack. Could see it n but nothing apparent!
Cleaned it all up and put back together and crossed my fingers for MOT!

PASSED MOT OK. I was there watching him test it!, no drips, but when I got home it was all wet again!

I had to ring up and book my service in so will find out next week what it is!

I had a new Rack Fitted back in May 05 by Porsche, Should it have failed in 7 years and 11,000 Miles???

Shouldn't have failed but sounds like it has. They possibly didn't flush the system through when they fitted the new rack, so any grit that had got into the system through the failed seals gets into the seals of the new rack greatly increasing wear.

Have you checked the fluid level to confirm that's the issue? Don't let it run dry whatever you do or you'll end up needing a new power steerring pump as well.

Guess there is no way to prove what they did 7 years ago now!
If it has gone what's my chances to arguing it shouldn't and get it cheaper or free?
Fluid is half way, did check that on Sunday. Still have more fluid from last time it leaked!

Do you feel brave enough?

Western power steering in bristol will overhaul your lightly used existing rack using correct zf seals and return it to you in about four working days ,and all for about £200 pounds.

christian...................................

A genuine porsche new or exchange rack will make your eyes water ,so is in my view very poor value especially in light of your second failure!!

Agree - had same problem 7 years ago. Opc wanted £1000 for new rack plus fitting. I took it off myself and took it to Western Power Steering and they reconditioned it. Been perfect ever since. All for £199 then.

Just waiting to hear back from Bob Watson & have to ring back to Auto Farm and speak to Dick tomorrow

Both my Cam Covers have got worse and need doing, (Have ben getting worse the last 3 years now!) OPC all in for both £589

What sort of cost should they be?

Also the Cam Chain Box is Weeping, they said that is a harder job?? Is it???

Hi yes the cam chain covers are more difficult to do, I have never done them with the engine in! could be done but much better with engine out, not a bad job to drop the engine. Berny.

Booked into Bob Watson on Tuesday for Rack removal then rack off to Western Power Steering to be refurbed for £200 then back to Bob to be refitted along with the 2 Cam Covers
Hopefully that will be it!!
