Powermax chip

Hi,
New to the Porsche scene.
Collecting my 1994 968 Cabriolet Friday.

With reference to the Powermax chip. Everything I read about it is very positive but I gather you need a better air filter.
Does it do better with a 'Cone' type filter or is the use of a KNN in place of the standard filter sufficient??

Hi George, and welcome to 968 ownership, The promax chip is a must for these cars, smoothes out the power delivery and makes the car a much more pleasant drive if thats possible. No need for a cone filter just a K&N Panel replacement, i dont think it gives much more HP but does make it feel better no more kick in the ass at 4500 rpm just even power all the way through. Hope you enjoy your car and if your a HP seeker be prepared to start spending lots, as getting any significant extra power out of a 968 is an expensive business
 
Re the powermax chip. That is what I had read that it becomes much smoother. Thanks for the tip about the KNN. Is there much difference with a stainless exhaust and Cat replacement? Looking forward to many years of fun. Aye George
 
Its ProMax the chip not powermax, from Promax MotorSport in Milton Keynes. the best thing you can do regarding the exhaust is get one made by a local Stainless Custom Place, like Vortex. wont get much change out of a grand though, I would also replace the Lambda Sensor as well that can make huge difference to the way the car runs. the Porsche price is ridiculous this is the Bosch Part number for the sensor 0 258 003 011
 
Best place to buy the Promax 7100 chip is K300 aka Stu who owns the 968uk forum. Comes with superb fitting instructions - that's where I bought mine! Waylander's right, it smooths out the power delivery so it's more linear rather than the big kick around 4k when the variocam kicks in. Does not affect the lower rev rrange, so does not mess up emissions for the MoT! It's quite easy to fit as the ECU lives behind a wooden panel in the passenger footwell - pull the carpet back and you'll see the panel.
 
Hi George and congrats on your choice of Porsche, if you're picking it up on Friday you'll have it for the weekend, always nice getting to know a car for a couple of days, hope you get some good weather to really enjoy it.

Hi All. Picked up my 968 Cabriolet Fri eve. Drove to Leigh on sea. Sat drive to Ashford, short stop then on to Amesbury folowed by a trip to Portsmouth. Sun morn return to Amesbury, back to Portsmouth. 1630 Left Pompey and drove home to Dunoon Scotland. I can honestly say 'I get it' why would you have anything else, car is a delight, comfortable, Handsome, quick, Lithe and FUN. Look forward to many more drives. Quick question. Is the Promax the preferred chip as I see ACCELL do one as well? Comments welcome. Cheers All George

That's one heck of an introductory drive George, shame you did not say you would be in Ashford, I'm only 8 miles from there and could have given you a drive in my Promax equipped cab for comparison! I had a tip coupe with the standard chip for 12 1/2 years before I bought the cab - not knowing that it had a non-standard (but not Promax) chip already fitted. Can't remember exactly what it was, but it needed a daughter board between it and the ECU board, which the Promax does not. Anyway, the Promax (ROW7100) made the car much nicer, and virtually every 968uk forum member that shows a non-standard chip fitted shows a Promax. Well worth the Ă‚ÂŁ105 it cost from Stu. The instructions that came with it show it's pretty easy to fit, but as I'm a bit ham fisted with electrics I had mine fitted by the local Porsche indie.
 
Chris Thanks for the info and Promax ordered along with replacement KNN air filter. Will definitley give you a shout next time, it was a bit of a flying visit to Ashford. It was a great drive and as I said 'I get it' now. I did notice the car does attract some strange reactions from smile and wave to drivers of completely incapable cars wanring to... 1. Cut you up, 2. Drag race off lights etc. 3. Road race by getting as close as they can to your rear bumper to try to force you faster.... The green eyed monster is a terrible thing. Couple of issues with the car are wiper does not switch off after using skoshers. Speedo is about 15% off, reading low. Might be the 17" cup alloys n low profiles or ??? Cheers George

Where it gets amusing is when you're on a twisty back road and some clown in an XRi decides to crawl up your exhaust. First corner you change down (discretely) and accelerate through it, as the road holding of the 968 is awesome. A couple of "same again" corners later, when he's had to really boot it to try and catch up, you see him really struggling to get round the corner! Speedo reading low is odd - and worrying. Mine reads about 8-10% high on standard 16" rims. Your best bet is to ask on 968uk, there are some pretty knowledgeable people on there who have, between them, completely dismantled the 968 and put it back together again! FWIW I think Porsche did not recommend 17's for the cab - I know Memartin on 968uk has tried 16's and 17's on his cab and prefers the 16's, I think it's to do with chassis stiffness and ride hardness on 17's. The first cab I drove was on 18's (225 fronts and 255 rears) and it was awful, very harsh ride, heavy steering and tramlined like crazy. Other than that, I've only ever driven on 16's, both my coupe and the cab. I know 17's are popular for the coupes, and genuine 17 cup wheels sell quickly for good money.

the culprit for that will be the frequency converter in the fuse box. or a filthy NSF abs ring the wipers should wipe 4-5 times then sleep for a while then one more wipe
 
Don't forget that, if you change the chip you need to inform your insurer. Some might say, "Don't bother, they'll never know." However, if you have a serious crash, when you really need lots of insurance cover, you can be assured they will check your car. You can further be assured that, if they find you have chipped that car, and will perhaps demonstrate that you were fully aware of what you were doing by virtue of Internet posts, and the like, there is every possibility your insurance will be invalidated. Just saying.
 
the last person that notified his insurance did not have to pay any more for the change but it is worth while doing it
 
Classic line did not change my premium when I told them about the Promax install. Re speedo - I'd forgotten that it takes its signal from the NS ABS sensor - had to replace mine a while back (and, as it happens, the relay) when the speedo "failed" completely! Sounds a good call!
 
Do you know if the 944 1990 is the same set up? If so it would explain the problems I am having with a friends 1990 944 Cab that has an intermittent speedo that registers 10mph low.
 
it is an electronic sensor but in the gearbox on the 944, not sure it has a frequency converter the same, I can have a look in PET
 
Hi George, Glad you're enjoying your 968 cab, I would reiterate the comments about fitting 16" rims as opposed to 17" rims, when I purchased my 968 I already had a 1991 944 S2 Cab and on our first week away in the 968 found the drive awful on B & C roads compared to the 944 S2 ( tramlining & pulling into the verge + heavy steering) decided it must be the 17" rims & low profile tyres! Fortunately I had a spare set of 16" Design 90 rims & tyres for the 944 so fitted them in place of the 17" wheels hay presto back to the excellent handling similar to the 944! Bought a set of second hand 16" cup one's (found on club forum) had them refurbed + new tyres and sold (very quickly on club forum) the 17" cup one wheels! Promax chip a sound move, I've also fitted a top & bottom strut brace (find them on Porsche Shop's web site) to cut down scuttle shake! I had incorrect speedo problems on my 944S2 turned out to be as simple as realigning the needle! Apparently it was quite popular in the late 80's & early 90's to change the dial faces for white ones and in doing so the needle could get misaligned when replaced. Good advice & how to regarding 944 speedo can be found on a USA web site called Clarks Garage just type "Porsche 944 Clarks Garage" into a search engine & you should find it? Covers removing the instrument cluster (easy) the speedo can then be removed so you can adjust the needle use the rest stop position as a reference it will rotate on the shaft! Also covers the sender unit in the gearbox! Hope the above helps! Regards Tony
