PP Reports

I was considering buying an Early 911 as a possible project so started looking back through previous issues at the register section to see who's brains I needed to pick. Not much in there I'm afraid so then it was with interest that I read as part of the Register Directors report, "Duties of a Register Secretary" in the latest issue of PP. Particularly the section that reported on the league table, measuring the performance of each RS's and or assistant's ability to provide a monthly report. It would appear that some of the RSs had their ears bashed at the Workers' Conference regarding the production of a monthly report, even the ones who weren't there!
According to Robin he is still technically the register assistant for the early 911 register. (see Jan PP). I was under the impression from the announcement in PP and on this forum that Philip Taysom had been appointed RS with Phil Johnson as assistant. I am aware that the two Phils are busy, one with business commitments, the other with his house but that still leaves? You've guessed it.
So taking the advice offered in PP by Robin, I am asking "Why is this register not being represented and why has there not been a report published for the Early 911 register for the last four months?" Hoisted by your own petard methinks! Clearly a case of double standards. Please get off the RS's backs, they do a damned fine Voluntary Job!!!!! Even if some don't make the PP every month.
In the end I decided to do something else with two wheels instead.

I do have to say its pretty appalling that there has not been an Early 911 report in Porsche Post this year!

I handed over the Reg Sec role to Philip Taysom at the begining of the year (so nothing to do with me then . . . well yes and no).

Don't know wants gone wrong . . . but he's gone very quite over here, and yes no reports (I sent him an e-mail yesterday reminding him the deadline was upon him).

Come on Philip . . . where are you???

Regards
Phil J

Thanks to everyone for the posts on this thread - both good and bad.

Firstly, let me apologise for the lack of words within Porsche Post - business has had me travelling rather more than I would have liked over the past few months - and in many cases internet access has been poor or non existant - or so expensive that it's just not viable to use it for non-work related things.

Further, the first piece I forwarded to Robin Walker when I was kindly appointed still hasn't (as far as I'm aware) been published.

While providing content for Porsche Post is an important part of the Register Secretary's job - I have two further points to offer on this:

1) I have never viewed the Early 911 column as 'my' space - the Porsche Club GB is 'our' Club and I would prefer it that members write something that they find interesting for their fellow members to read; I've suggested this to several people and been waiting for a response ever since. My view is that I should only be writing something in the absence of words from Early 911 Register interested members.

2) surely the 'job' of the Register Secretary is to assist members more than it is to provide content for Porsche Post? Within the past few weeks, I've tried to assist members with buying early 911's, selling their cars to new owners, members find parts for their cars, organise events like the Early Porsche Trackday at Silverstone, in one case try and reunite a member with his late father's car - and TRY and get a grip on the Early 911 Register data - which is largely out of date or incorrect.

The task of bringing all of this together is not small.

Then again, these are *my* views - and I am *your* Register Secretary - so if you'd rather the focus was changed then I will of course take note.

My apologies again to those who are offended by the missing words in Porsche Post - but please do consider that there are many other things a Register Secretary has to do - along with keep their day to day business in a state to pay for Porsche ownership [;)]

Perhaps those who have a view would like to contribute something for the Early 911 column within Porsche Post? It is 'our' collective Club after all [:)]

Philip

Hope the trip went well, and good to have you back.

I see your point about the PP section being for the members and totally agree . . . . but in all my time as RS, despite pleading, I reckon I got about 3 articles.

For some the PP article is the only involvement they have (and want) with the club, so my view was . . . I should always try and put something in.

I think Arfor is writing something mind you . . . which should be an interesting read.

Regards
Phil

PS Re. the missing article - you need to send it to mike@porscheclubgb.com

i see Porsche post as a golden oppertunity for a R/S to communicate with the members. and promote any event for example silverstone pre 1974 track day on the 30th July.

Greetings and welcome back, Philip. As you have already gathered, you were missed!

Phil J is correct - I am putting something together right now,and I'll e mail it to you shortly.

Arfor.

My 2p worth.

Firstly, it was good to see the write-up this month from Phil (Early 911) on the Cotswold Rally, with pictures, particularly as my white 2.4T was 'featured'. As 'tuther' Phil (note the northern distinction) said, it is a register sectionm piece, so more write-ups by members the better - gladly write up something of my ownership experience if that is appropriate.

What about an Early 911 Running Report - we have them in all other magazines, so why not PP ? Again, I do all sorts of little updates on my car on Pelican and DDK, so why not PP ?

Helen - I also agree it is a single focal point for the Secretary to put across anything specific he wants in relation to the register, but there isn't always anything specific that he has to say, or as I fully know myself, travelling and hotels / airports take time and doing a PP article cannot always be easy.

So everyone has my support.

Phil T - Have I been added to the Regsietr yet, or is there a form I need to complete (online preferably).

Ian

fully understand the time these things can take but to get a few line into pp can be done via a e-mail (yes even PCGB now use e-mail)also their are two assistants for this register so if the R/S is unable to do the report (and it could just be a few lines just to let us know there is still an active register)then he should ask one of the assistants to assist.

it is not the R/S's responsability to source cars for buyers and inspect them before purchase..that is a service that the R/S should definatly not be responsable for....imho. and could lead to all sorts of trouble.

Helen - I think this issue has been discussed - there will be a a feature in PP from me this month and it will include some wonderful words from a member who has kindly contributed. I sincerely hope more members will put pen to paper / fingers to keyboard as this is more interesting to me - as a member.

Please don't lets fall into the trap of making assumptions [;)] The Club cannot provide this service and isn't - HOWEVER the Club CAN help fellow members be introduced to fellow members or prospective members - and leave them to do their own thing. And to me, that's one of the most important services a Club can provide.

Thanks for the support - I'm typing this from my flat in Singapore before rushing out to a dinner meeting - it's easier when I can get online [:D]

I got your email so I'll reply to you offline - I 'captured' the basic details off DDK when you posted the pictures - but yes, there's a new register form which I'm (still) working on which will enable me to capture much more detailed information for the register.

not disagreeing with you Phillip, all i'm saying is that there needs to be something in pp every month in order to reach the members that don't use the forums and also new members in order to let them know whats happening in the club.. would also(as you say)love to see articals by membersabout their own experiences owning and running these wonderful machines but, as an exrtra to your (or your assistants)comments not as the only thing in the register write up

fair anough..........nice work.

without Nick Moss, DDK, and others help i would never have taken the plunge from owning brand new into owning only early cars[8D][8D][8D] it would be good to see thePCGB starting to encourage people like me.(eg who don't fit into the PCGB porsche owners image)

I'll rest when every member has an Early 911 [:D][:D][:D]

Phil,

I'll see what I can do, based on my Carrera 3.2 and now 911T ownership experience.

Don't expect it straight away, but any idea on how many words you need ?

Ian

Ian,
(Philip hope you don't mind me responding)
As you'll see from looking at the mag . . . each register doesn't have pages and pages (although don't thik there's any offical limit anymore) . . . I'd say 300-400 words leaving a little space for events etc.

A running report is a good idea, but perhaps not in the register section. Probably best to run the passed Steve or Mike - e-mail publications@porscheclubgb.com

Phil

Good to read the report in the Early 911 section of the June edition of Porsche post. Thanks, Phil J.
I also particularly liked seeing the same picture used on the cover of both the main magazine and Porschefile - great idea. Rather like having a car parked on the driveway, with a scale model on the mantelpiece.
