Pre-73 road tax

Not a type specific question but probably the right place to ask. What is the story on free road tax for classic cars? Does this go by build date or registration? What is the cut off?
Reason I'm asking is I've seen a car advertised as currently tax paying but built mid-72 so I'm curious.

wuld that happen to be a gulf blue 914?

Yep, Helen, that's right. I can't understand why someone who could qualify for exempt status would pay for road tax.
Thanks for the link, Dave, I'll have a look but I think you've told me everything I need to know.

yes that puzzled me too. its not like its difficult or expensive to get build date/delivery date confirmed[:-]

Contrary to assertions, it is difficult to get specific construction finish dates for 'Early birds'. My '73 car was not registered until April '73, and because it was imported privately and not by Porsche Cars, they could not help. The Factory were MOST unhelpful. In the end, I had to abide by Robin Walker's research in P.P. some time back, based on VIN Nos. and accept defeat gracefully.

When I registered a 69' targa for tax exemption my local DVLA would only accept the Porsche build date confirmed by Porsche them selfs!cost £80 through Porsche GB to obtain it!

The last time I enquired about obtaining a "˜Letter of Origin' (which confirms the date your car was manufactured) I was told you need to write to:

Warranties Department
Porsche Centre Reading
Bath Road
Calcot
Reading
Berkshire
RG31 7SG

Enclosing:
ú A photocopy of the bill of sale or receipt (e.g. a letter detailing the chassis number, showing that you have bought the car)
ú A photocopy of the Registration document.
ú A cheque for £64.62.

Could always try calling Reading on 0118 930 3911.
