[FONT=courier new"]I'm investigating a pre-heater for my Boxster as I intend to continue using it for my daily commute throughout the winter as I enjoy driving it so much. My daily commute is only 12 miles in total round trip, so the car has just about reached 80-90C when I arrive meaning that I dare not use full throtle through most of my journey. Most of the journey is urban traffic.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

[FONT=courier new"]The engine is still relatively young and it would be a shame to subject it to daily cold starts and I also find that de-frosting the screen is harder than hard tops. [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

[FONT=courier new"]I have looked at Kenlowe and DEFA (Finnish)appliances. The Kenlowe plugs in the heater matrix supply and has an active pump, whilst the DEFA is passive and plugs in below the top up chamber. Both are driven by the mains. I am about to purchase the Kenlowe as it seems the more effective option and easier to install (sitting near the battery), however it would be interesting if any one else has had any experience of these devices.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

We have had two, both factory fitted on X5s. In winter they are brilliant.

We live in a valley in the Cotswolds that gets particularly cold in winter and the X5 is kept under an open fronted coach house. When I get up in the morning I just press the remote and the pre-heater starts. By the time we leave the house the car is warm and cosy. Then, flick on the heated seats - luxury.

I think this one is made by Webasto and is powered by diesel, same as the car. Totally discreet and virtually silent.

Yes - you just plug into mains with any domestic timer plug. I believe it needs about an hour to warm up to 85c.

I intend to purchase one soon - especially with the ice age being forecasted this Winter.

If anyone else is interested then may try to get group discount. They cost £240 each new, but on E-bay, the older s/h models sell around £200 !
