Pre-purchase and servicing?

Hello,

I am about to privately purchase an immaculate 1998 993 manual Targa with 68,000 miles and full service history. I wanted someone to carry out an inspection.

Who do you guys recommend? Should I get a 111 point test at Porsche Cambridge or do you advise someone independent? The car is in Norwich (I live in London) but the owner will take it to someone I choose.

It also was serviced at Porsche Blyfleet last year and has only covered 4,000 mile since. Should it be serviced annually or every 8,000 miles?

Thanks for any advice and I look forward to joining the 993 gang!

James

hi, i would be inclined to get it inspected at an offical porsche center, because if they do find anything during their inspection that needs attention, their quote to rectify it will tend to be more expensive than an independent may quote, and u can then use it to help negotiate a better deal with the owner.may sound a bit harsh, but then your going to buy a car not make friends.
Looks a nice car though, good luck with it,you wont be dissapointed with a 993,cheers

I'm afraid I would disagree with the previous poster. My experience is that few OPCs have the experience of these cars anymore or the inclination. And they cost a fortune. Go to Peter Morgan for an inspection and then find a good indie to build a relationship with during your ownerhip. You wont get luxury coffee and leather sofas but you will get proper attention to detail. Too far away for you but I highly recommend Jon Mitchell Porsche.

I have almost the identical car and mileage - mines a tip.

That was the whole point of me suggesting using an opc,as they cost a fortune and they would quote accordingly, as he is looking to buy the car he want the most expensive quote which he can then use to try and negotiate a better price from the sender. I do agree with u that if he buys the car, then a good independ is maybe the way forward, although give some opc's their due, some have people trained on 993s and you can negotiate with them for a good labour rate. also i would think if he could get it inspected at a opc, they would do it at short notice,if he books someone to come out and look at it,and the car is good and well priced
it will probly be sold b4 he has chance to get someone to come and inspect it anyway

Choose the way forward as follows:-

-If you see a car and like it agree a price subject to PPI.
-Place a returnable deposit down subject to PPI.
-Following PPI if all not clear either ask for work to be carried out at sellers expense or re negotiate price.

hiya, if the car is in norwich, you could give matthew baxter at autowerk a call as he is based in norwich and have heard positive comments about his work and he may be able to inspect the car, regards jason p

Thanks decided againist the car- roof mechanism did not seem right and not flexible on the price. The hunt continues :)

Bit late reading this - but just going back to the original question - who to do PPI - The 111 point check is pretty weak for checking out our cars. Yes will will check that the bulb for the engine lid illumination is working - but it uses up most of the 111 points on stuff like that. If the clutch is not actually slipping the guys at the OPC will not have the experience to say "that's a but stuff for a 993 - will not last long". As mentioned above, you are better off with an indie who knows 993s (any Porsche indy will).... then you could take it to an OPC to get a quote!!

Bowlane,
I have a 993 Targa which I've just put up for sale if you're interested? You can read the details here:

(.........but of course if you specifically wanted a manual it won't be your 'cup of tea')

.........and the roof works perfectly (at any speed!)
