Pre-purchase Inspection

Hi All!

I went with a friend of mine today to look at a 2005 987 3.2 which he is interested in. Looks to be a good example, with low mileage, and good spec., but I'm no mechanic!!

Any recommendations Hertfordshire area for someone who can do a thorough pre-purchase inspection? AA/RAC is the easy choice, but do they have enough specialist knowledge?

Also, is the RMS issue age or mileage related, or random?! Mine is 6 yrs old/ 50k on the clock and has only just started "weeping" slightly.

All replies gratefully received.

Cheers

David

Peter Morgan seems to be well regarded for PPI's, I've not used him myself though. Regarding the RMS, most weep slightly. Mine was changed under warranty about 20k miles ago in my 3.2 2005 Boxster, it had done just over 20k at the time. Most people suggest living with it until the clutch needs to be changed. General consensus is that unless its anything more than a drip it's not worth worrying about, however if its leaving puddles on the drive then that's a bit different....

We used Peter Morgan when we bought our 3.2. However, although the guy sent by Peter was very thorough, he told the seller not to accept anything less than the asking price. Not very helpful advice when we were paying for the report!!

Hi David, You could try a couple of Indies in your area - RPM Technik and JZM. Regarding the (overplayed?) RMS/IMS issue, the general concensus is that if there's just oil misting it's best left alone but if it's dripping oil then it's time for action. Good luck! Jeff

Thanks for all the replies do far - much appreciated. I'll pass the names & nos onto my mate. I'm sure he'll be on here in his own right before too long! Cheers David

I think I would be having words with Peter Morgan, if his guy said that. The info and the guys thoughts are yours and yours alone as you paid for it. What did he say when you brought it to his attention?? ( I;m curious as I might want to use his service)

my 2001 Boxster S at 93K mls has bad oil leak from RMS. Porsche Dealer at Chester quoted me £1600 to fix. A independent Porsche garage did it it for £310 (though they were doing other work as well so may have reduced the price more).
