Pricey 924S!!!

Hi All

I'm going to look at a red 924s this weekend

The car has 60,000 mile Full history (600m Service has been done with bills)

I have'nt seen it yet but talked to the owner quite a bit.

He's told me that the Power steering rack is leaking and that he'll knock some money off the price. Advertised at £3995 but I'm only going as high as £3500. What do yo think about the price I have'nt seen any go for more that £2700!!

Can anyone tell me how pricey/how much grief is it to replace the power steering rack.

Anyother advise on buying a 924s is also appreciated.

Thanks

He who hopes to be a porsche owner by this weekend.

Anything over £3000 would have to be a really, really nice example. Look for an immaculate car and a proud owner who has every bill, MOT form and service stamp neatly presented for your attention.

Not sure about what's involved in curing the power steering leak, may be a good idea to ask the 944 boys as I think it's more of less the same set-up.

And don't be afraid to haggle, haggle, haggle on the price! [:)]

Good luck!

Leaking rack is expensive to fix. At £3,500, the vendor should be paying for this, otherwise the price seems reasonable given the modest mileage, assuming the rest of the car is immaculate. Good 924S's are not that uncommon, so don't feel pressured, there are other good cars out there.

I got it in the end for £3200 with a new stero. I reckon I paid over the odds but.....

The cars mint (except for the leaky rack) interior is spotless and the dashs has;nt cracked.

Drove it back 143 miles from near bath to london without a problem.

Going to be spend the weekend crawling over it and maybe waxoyl the over body if it needs it.

Well that and posing in it....

BTW is there a set time when the water pump needs to be replaced?? Its fine but i heard it had to be replaced at 60k miles

I paid £850 for my 924 but it had loads of problems which my son is sorting bit by bit, but she feels good when I'm out in it and looks really cool although she is 22 years old looks very stylish and modern, definitely eye catching.

My 1988 924s had 86000 miles and FSH. I negotiated and got it for £2250. It is very clean.

I would get a good local garage to price a supply/fit price for a recon rack and add another 100 quid for the hassle factor. Get at least that amount knocked off the asking price. MAKE SURE the timing belt has been done and that the tensioner has been set up properly. A whining noise from cold that goes away when warm might mean the belt/tensioner needs to be replaced.

Good luck
Mark

Hello Neil - Welcome to the forum [:)]
paid £1150 for mine a few years back, and like you I had a few problems at first, but I stuck with it - I doubt I would have done the same with an 'ordinary car' [;)]
