Prior to our 997....

Most of us here have had previous models before getting our 997....
What would you choose now?? 964, 993 or 996?? I have had a 964 and 996 but missed out on the 993. What would you choose? Prices seem quite close to each other now for a late 993 and an early 996. I would choose the 993 as I think better looking and never had one....your thoughts please?

having had one!i would answer it would depend on what you want to use it for-everyday,long distance, trackday tourer etc etc.also depends on your size!i found the 993 sports seats really uncomfortably tight on long journeys and bit cramped but if i wasnt over 6ft and 13+stone i would probably prefer a 993 over 996.bit more interesting.996 very relaxing for long journeys though.

I had 993 4S and I still believe it has the most beautiful design of all the Porsches...
If I would ever go back to previous models, that would be the car I would be looking for...
One of the reasons I went for 997 Gen 2 was because with all the last appearance changes it even closer resembles 993 than Gen 1...
I also agree with other comments about more comfort in long journeys... 993 was absolutely OK as a daily driver, however it is difficult to argue that 997 fits better this role...

When I went from my 964 to the 996, it felt fantastic but after a while I missed my Maritime Blue 964! It felt more of a sports car rather than the 996. Not saying a 996 isn't a great car, it is but a bit soulless and cold ( if that makes sense? ). More comfort, more refinement, but lacked that special feeling. maybe I am bias as the 964 was my first 911 but it was sorely missed. When I sold the 996 and bought myself an old weekend 911 Sportsmatic ( underated in my view as it was way ahead of its time ), even that was more fun than the 996. The 997 is the one as previously mentioned that should have replaced the 996, it feels OLD SCHOOL for us old fogies! I have also never actually driven a 993 so cannot give a view but from what I hear, great car...

Made me think back, as I have been fortunate to have had a 964, 993, 996 and 997 Gen1 and 2. In that order, and all from new. And therein lies the problem, because each one was a leap forward (in my opinion) from the previous car, and I have enjoyed each and every one immensely. I personally wouldn't want to go back to a 964, for instance, as a daily driver. Great car in it's day, and I'm sure it is still great fun, but it's now a 20 year old car and I've become used to the march of technology since then. So if push came to shove I'd choose a 996 out of the three.

very interesting peter,as youve clearly spent lots of time with them all-when i was changing my 996 i looked at going back to a993 as i love the look but the guys at camtune,(who had 2 nice 993's to sell)thought i was nuts to consider going back in time..and persuaded me to go for new, even tho i didnt buy from them.
ideally i would like a 997 and persuade linda to get a 993 for high days!!who knows??

I keep debating wheather i would enjoy driving a 3.0 sc or a 3.2 as a weekend car to keep tucked away for a sunny day as ive now gotten so used to the agility of my 997s.
I had a 930 turbo 12 yrs back and a part of me keeps screaming "AIRCOOLED"!!!!
Whilst i think i have realised that selling the 997 for a 3.2 or sc is not an option whilst i can afford to keep it i do find myself gazing at older models still.
Would i enjoy driving an aircooled again do u think?

Have the same feeling! Love the older ones. My friend has a 3.2 Carrera, guards red Targa and I love it. Came round the other day and parked it side by side with mine and its just amazing how much the shape has evoled BUT its still so similar! Would you enjoy driving it after your 997? Probably the first hour but after that........??????

that is ort of my feelings so id probably have to have it as a summer car that i keep garaged seperately. Problem is thou i will then have another car to service and maintain and maybe it all then gets a little expensive.
What i need to do is get a drive in someones 3.2 or 3.0sc in exchange for a blast in my car. The idea of a nice little summer targa sounds lovely thou.

Sorry to upset the "the don't make em like they used to" brigade but I drove a couple of oldies recently and apart from the lovely air cooled noise they were old.

A lot has been said about feel etc but I found the difference marginal, what I noticed were relatively poor brakes (still very good for their time mind but utterly lacking in feel), heavy steering at speed (something we criticize some modern cars for using to make up for lack of feel), very vague gear changes and being 6ft 3 inches tall and very broad a tiny tiny cabin that to drive any distance would give me backache and neck ache oh yes and a crashy ride.

Pluses the same basic feel to the engines - elastic, responsive, revvy and give you a good push when pressing on. Nice handling (shame about the heavy steering, you just loose the precision the chassis is trying to give you). Fun at low speed but so also is my 997.

I love the looks of the 993, part of the reason I went for the 997 is it captures something of that look

The long and the short of it is I love my 997 and do prefer it to its predecessors. Most of you will disagree and that's fine by me, I am not disagreeing with any one else's choice, this is just my preference.

My car before the 997 was a 987 and that is my second favorite car.

All makes sense and i have to say my 997 is brilliant its just the depreciation hit that has made me stop and think.
I also went with the 997 as the looks were similar to the 993.
