'Private' plate

My 'new' car is registered B944 LEC, which was advertised on the listing as being worth £1800. Whilst having 944 on the plate is quaint, I would sooner have some cash! It's actually a J plate 1992.

I have looked on DVLA site to try and ascertain its worth (cos I don't reckon it's worth 1.8K), but it's difficult to try and find something similar to compare. Anyone got any experiences or opinions? Any links?

Anyone interested?

Not wanting to sound hard.
BUT.
Its worth what anybody will pay for it....
I personally dont think its worth anything like £1800.....

Likewise my 968 has the plate, K968 ***. Its great for me as it adds a special 'extra' to the car but IMHO cashing it in is not worth the hassle.

Could it be that if you look really, really hard, you can make the name "Alec" out of it? Is that it's supposed value? If you look on some of the reg sites like Reg Transfers, they'll give you a valuation for your plate and market it for you (for a fee, obviously).

I think that sometimes the year registration is also significant. In my own case I would be interested in a sensibly priced E 944 ... Why? Because I have a 1988 944 Turbo S. Only 70 of these forgotten RHD gems imported to the UK in 1988 (that's 5 less than the fabulous 924 Carrera GT).

At a Classic Car show at Thoresby Hall earlier this year, two Silver Rose owners came to look all over my car. They stated that from their research, of the 70 cars imported in 1988, 63 were Silver Roses and 7 were made to special order. They reckoned that my Zermatt Silver car with black leather was one of the 7 and that they had seen Black and Red ones but never a Zermatt Silver one before. Can anyone confirm this information?

To cap my year, at this year's National Event my car took the award for the best 944 Register car on the Sunday in the Anonymous Concours. This was pleasing because I had done the Blenheim Rally in the showers on the Saturday morning and the car had not seen any enthusiastic cleaning after.

Classic cars are for using.

Several years ago I paid £928 all in for A944 + my initials, last year we bought another specified old reg plate from the DVLA for £600... a sealed bid auction, so no-one was interested in paying that much even. Overall I suspect the price of plates has fallen.

I happen to like the statement "A944" but wouldn't give you thank-you for "B944" unless it was on a "B"reg 944... and preferably my initials. So... I would think it unlikely to be worth more than £500.

You also have to consider the car it is going on. No one with any sanity is going to pay for a numberplate at a price significant to the value of the car.

Most of us have 944's because they provide cheap performance. Because we like "cheap" we aren't about to spend out big money on something that does nothing to improve the performance when, for the same money, we could get something that does.

Although it's a long time ago now (11+ years) my plate WDF 144 cost me £300. Now I have no idea what it's worth today but from what I understand other than when it has someones initials , which can generate a higher price the value depends on how many digits are in the registration and in what order, ie my plate would be worth more than an A,B,C prefix if you get what I mean? A plate with less digits than mine I would expect to be worth more still.

You are all lucky boys in fairness ... We cant change our plates here in Southern Ireland... What a car gets when new or imported stays with it.. A totally random number...!

whilst surfing just now came across this site www.nationalnumbers.co.uk according to them my plate is worth £800 maybe you could try them, they do a free valuation but remember to remove your number from the list afterwards.

Wouldn't really matter how much my plate is worth , it belongs to the car now and that will always be mine...[:)]

E944JOY is £1400.

Unless they were called Joy, and had an absolutely mint E reg 944, and lots of disposable cash......so quite a small market then. [:D]
