Private plates

I appreciate a divisive subject but looks like a fair % of members have private plates.
Had a few in past (& have one now) but always got ones related to the car not me and sold with the car
So do you think helps add value or detract?
Someone just bought 996T for£12K! So guessing dealers think 996's are on the up in value.
Seen E996 JOY for £700 or better off something like PC54 SSS for just £250 so does not harm value or matter if adds nothing?

To be honest the plate shouldn't ad value in my opinion if I wanted the car I would tell them to take it off If I didn't want it. also in MY opinion some plates look a bit excuse the phrase chavy if you can't afford the plate then don't make it look like The plate you can't afford.A dealer would take the plate off and sell it separately. If you want to buy a plate for investment choose wisely. Let us know the out come come luck Rosey

I got my plate in 1983 and I moves to whatever vehicle I have at the time started on a metro now on the 996 , even been on a micro van !

Personally, I think plates which relate to the car are a bit lame, unless they are perfect. For example, GT03POR doesn't do anything for me, but 911S would. I think personal plates are just that - personal to the owner - and 9 times out of 10 mean nothing to anyone else. I have RJH2R (my initials) on my Carrera, which I bought in 1990, and has been transferred from car to car. I have R2RXJ (Richard & Julie) on my daily drive. Because it contains an X it was only £250 from DVLA.

Unless it is a really special plate, I doubt if it would make any difference to the price and saleability.

I bought a secondhand Rover Vitesse SDI years ago with an Northern Ireland Colerane reg which I have transferred ever since currently on a recently acquired BMW E61 530D SE ---GJI 6565.
I don't think it has any value,or add value to the car but it saves me having to remember another no,I suppose disguises the age of the car & seems a "neat " label,-frequently people mention " were you driving the GJI BMW etc.
Neither of the Porsches has a personal no-our initials having A,C & I makes it difficult & COL 1N went for auction at over £20k if I remember correctly some years ago .
However Irene's 924S came with the reg-D124 LJO which is close but far away in a sense.

I've got K50 POR on my C4S, to remind me that when I bought it 10years ago it was a 50k Porsche - unfortunately the number should probably now be changed to K20 but I am hopeful that if (and I intend to ) I keep it for another 10 years the plate will become relevant again !

Lots of help thanks
With 2 ex W's too it is amazing any left for my car at all! Lot to convey in a number plate though! Maybe save for E996 JOY that's available

Some plates can look great (usually the expensive ones), but many don't.

Honestly though a 911 doesn't need one; they look great already.

Mine had a NI plate when I purchased it. I didn't like it and bought a plate from DVLA auctions for £250. It suits me and not too bothered what others think. I saw a plate at Le Mans 'H4' on a Ferrari - the plate itself was shortened as a square. Not sure of the legalities of customised plates in physical size, but guess there are exceptions for certain modes of transport.

I have my plate that I transfer from vehicle to vehicle as it was bought as a 25th birthday gift many years ago. It looks great, but only to me. I actually think the regular plate looks great on a car and an alternative adds nothing unless its exactly specific to the model, i.e. 996tt or GT3 etc... In my view an alternative should be used to personalise the vehicle for the individual owner. Just my opinion. No right or wrong. John.

I have 2 plates related to my name & put them on whichever car I buy or change. On the daily drive is M16 HEM & the 996tt has T60 HEM, so just a personal choice & a bit of fun really. They were only £250 plates, so will always hold that value I guess.
Just enjoy!

Thanks for replies
Still undecided but mainly just a shame they are all over priced!
P121 JON is £1300 and I have an H in my name.
WHO5 JPR is £399! Could be the one!!!

I brought V19 FLY when I passed my flying test about 10 years ago. My wife (Nikki) has a similar plate V19 NKY. Both have been on all our cars for years.

Hi |John
Don't forget you can only put that number onto a vehicle of equal age or newer.
So the above plate could not be put onto a 996!
