pro vs con of respray paintwork of a 993

Hi

I was wondering if anyone out there has had there 993 resprayed yet?

Mine is suffering from multiple stone chips at the front, plus some corosion around the windscreen. So thinking of getting the rust done and car whole body resprayed at the same time. Probably replace the cab roof as well.

This is of course likely to be a big bill :) however I hope the car will look awesome again for the next few years.

However are there any negatives to having this done?

Also anyone recommend a good bodywork place say within 100 miles of london? And how much a respray will cost?

I was planning on going to southbound trimmers for roof?

After the respray is done anyone recommend any paintwork treatments to protect the bodywork, I have seen some companies advertising in the back of magazines like EVO

Any help advise greatly appreciated :)

Sanjay

I had my 993 4S resprayed 6 months ago for exactly that reason - loads of tiny stone chips, including 1 on roof above screen and a couple of tiny dings on rear bumper, chips on door edges etc. Its a big job to do it properly - all glass out etc. I had it done by Portslade Panelworks near Brighton who used to be a Porsche approved bodycentre when the Sussex porsche centre was in portslade and who I have used before. Still a mercedes appproved centre. Cost around 2500 and looks absolutely immaculate. I wouldn't be able to tell it had been done. First class service - took about 3 weeks - highly recommended.

Hi, I had extensive spray work carried out on my car. This included corrosion repair around the windscreen, and front wheel arches, whole front end, rear bumper and a quarter panel and passenger door. I had the work carried out by a Porsche approved bodyshop. The quality of the paintwork was good but the reassembly work initially ooked like it had been done by a five year old. It was all rectified in the end and now the car looks superb. I had the front end protected with Paintshield. So far so good.

Not sure I would bother with a Porsche approved bodyshop again. I do have a lifetime warranty on the work. So time will tell..

The quality of the paint protection film fitted by Paintshield is superb. Again time will tell if the product is a as good as the claims.

There are very few 993s around with original paint that are not looking a bit tatty round the edges.

Hi, I would suggest you have a chat with Tony Littlejohn at gtrmotorsport. 07980 874690.

He is in Sindlesham, west of London. They have painted different bits of my car and the finish has been excellent. Last time they attended to some rust starting around the windscreen and ended up painting the roof at the same time, cost was just shy of £1000. Tony is ex-Porsche and the best I have have found. They also attended to the roof lining at the same time.

From what I have heard it is pretty rare now for any 993 out there not to have had been done at least up to the A pillars, even for blending the PU refresh...

Sanjay, I recently used Premier Body Shops in Luton for rust bubbles around the front screen - I have also used them once before. As a Porsche Approved Body shop they are probably more expensive but worth getting a quote from. Service was excellent, but had to take the car back for a few niggles re putting it back together .... from the above this unfortunatley does not look an usual problem.

I also understand there is a new approved repairer opened near St Albans, but I do not know the details - Porsche Hatfield would..

Sanjay,
if you're painting it to sell, I'd take some before photos to prove 'before' condition... buyers may suspect accident damage.

Maybe they would, but (though I'm not an expert on this), if the damage was bad enough surely there would be filler which could be detected with a depth gauge. And if a car was seen to have correct thickness paintwork and no filler, then panels may have been replaced which would be viewed by some as worse (but less easy to detect). But if there was bad chipping, you can be sure a buyer would use the fact as a negotiating point. AAHHHH too much analysis! [&:]

had been thinking about getting a 997, but with the economy so uncertain thought I would just do up the 993 and make it mint :) so wouldnt feel the need for a new car

already replaced clutch, suspension, 4 wheel tracking, re conolised the leather, etc etc

Hi Sanjay,
As per Harvey I have used Tony at GTR Motorsport for effectively a body restoration and trackday modifications. The work is top class and his attention to detail is second to none.
Please see attacehd pictures.
Kind regards Ian

TOTALLY agree with Harvey. Tony is totally genuine and a pleasure to talk to and his work is superb. He knows the cars inside out...

All,

Slightly late in the day but... Just had a respray done by Premier Panel Skills in Aldershot. I actually went in to have the scuttle done to remove the dreaded rust, but given the general state of the body work I decided to treat myself/the car. In the end (apart from the engine cover, which was fine) I did pretty much everything.

The finish is excellent, and transforms the car. Incidentally, as part of the job the body shop also realigned the front PU and the offside wing, replaced trim/seals, etc. and tidied up some interior trim. Very pleased with both the result and the service, and the car looks stunning.

Not affiliated in any way/etc. etc...

Cheers/John
