Problem Turbo Instrument Cluster HELP!

I have a problem with the instrument cluster on my 924 Turbo (1980 Reg).
The speedometer needle indicates the correct speed but the odometer, to show total mileage, or the trip meter to show chosen distances covered, do not change ?[&:]
Is there something adrift or do I need to be searching for a new part ?

Don't tell me your odometer stopped at about 91K miles. This is usual. There is a small gear that gets off line or broken. I have a contact who can repair yours fo about £25.

Don't do what I did. I bourght a second hand unit on ebay and it worked fine for 3 weeks. Guess the indicated mileage.

Geoff - Many thanks for the quick assistance. The odometer stopped at 84500 - not far off your estimate!
Who is the contact I need to get in contact with for repairs - I am in Worcestershire?
Thanks again.[:D]

His name is Eric Kirk and his phone number is 01993 882350. He lives in Oxfordshire, Diectly opposite Eynsham Hall if you are going to the festival in August.

If you contact him please use my name or else he might be reluctant to talk. He is an old Motorcycle racing friend of mine.

Usually the gear cracks. I used the unthreaded end of two 5mm nutserts which are a perfect size to cut off and press over the split boss with some cyanoacrylate (superglue) as insurance. I repaired my 924 turbo thus and it has worked perfectly for over 18months.

I will need to remove the instrument binnacle - I can see two screws to do thid but also need to remove the steering wheel. This is a 4 spoke design like the 944 - how do I remove the padding to access the wheel nut ( I have no manual at present) and what is the torque setting for the steering wheel on replacement please?

To remove the padding you pull on the sides - HARD! It'll feel like something is going to break, but it will come off in the end.

Forgive my technical ignorance but I am not sure what you mean by "the unthreaded end of two 5mm nutserts". As it solves the problem I would love to give it a go - can you post a picture of what you mean or point me in the direction of a supplier of said items. Thank you.

A nutsert is like a threaded pop rivet. You drill a hole the size of the o.d. of the nutsert, slightly countersink it and screw the nutsert onto the threaded mandrell of the pliers and insert into the hole. Squeezing the handles together pulls the threaded section forward, and swages the body of the 'sert out so that it grips in the hole. A bolt can then be screwed into the hole. If you buy two, cut off the threaded portion and use the hollow part of it.

Thanks for the information - I will try and solve the problem over the next few days once I have the nutserts - do you know the recommended torque setting for when I replace the steering wheel?

I have tried to source these nutserts without success, even at shops like Machine Mart; a local specialised tools shop can only sell me the complete riveting tool for over £20.00 - is there a chance you can send me two 5mm nutserts to cure the odometer problem as suggested ?
