Problem: Washer Jets Not Working

Guest

Hi all,

Slight problem, the washer jets have stopped working and no water is spraying from them, the window wipers are working and the fuse looks ok so it cannot be the fuse. Im guessing it might be the pump [] Has anyone else had this problem or can help in any way???

Edit: The Washer sprayers on the headlights are working, do these go off the same pump??? HHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPPPP

Thx Roy

Ah! I know the answer to this one for once! The headlights work off a separate (sp?) pump.
However, the cause of non-working windscreen jets, dunno!
Sorry!

Pull the wires off the screen pump (on an oval dash car its the upper pump on the reservoir) and check with a voltmeter as a friend pulls the stalk in the cabin. New pumps are under £20 IIRC but I personally have had problem with the wiring breaking up inside the cable []

There is a one wy valve in line with the wiper jet hoses, that can fail and cause the jets not to work or be very very weak.

Mine do this... there is a plug that can work its way loose under the water bottle... happened to me at the MOT station... nearly failed me for it!!

Had this happen on both of my cars. The first time the pipe had split. After checking every cm and finding split bit, fixed it, and it worked again. Second time pump on washer bottle failed. You can check this by getting someone else to try washers and listen to that pump- if its working it makes a noise, if not it doesn't. Not very sciencetific but easy. 2 minute job to change if that's the problem.

Grab the stalk pull it towards you so it contacts and move it up and down really fast and it'll start squirting. The contacts in the stalks are full of carbon from all the contacting over the years. Trust me it worked on mine, i had perfect voltage, pump worked and fuse ok, so the stalk full of carbon contact was the problem.

Pump failed on mine, the early ones had a pump that was rebuildable (clean the bits and lube it), later ones cannot be taken apart, but they are fairly universal, Halfords have a range. I had a vauxhall astra one (MkII) lying around that fitted straight in and its smaller and lighter [;)]

Ooh, must buy Vauxhall Astra II washer pump [:D]

pull the plug (or fuse) on the headlight pump, and pull the stalk. If you can hear the pump, it ain't the electrics and will probably be that bloomin' valve! If you can't hear the pump, pull the plug, and whack a voltmeter across it. If you see voltage, it's the pump. If you don't, pray.....
