problem with cruise control

hi guys, wondered if someone could help?

cruise control on my 1986 944 turbo, fitted as standard only kicks in if you hold the stalk forward. as soon as you release the stalk it disengages. when holding the stalk you can feel the accelerator pedal move away from your foot and the car speeds up.
have taken off the steering wheel, parts of the dash to remove the unit from the steering column (indicator, and windscreen wiper stalks included in this) and cleaned up the contacts that activate it. disconnected the plug under the bonnet next to the cruise control unit - these contacts appear to be fine.
checked the fuse - fine.
pulled out the relay - no idea what to look for

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated[:D]
cheers
