Problematic whine/moan noise Please help!

Hi All

New member with a problematic Boxster here!

I have had my gorgeous Boxster for 3 years and it has been perfect up til now. But...since January I have had a whine/whinge noise coming from the rear near side. It is not happening all the time but is getting both louder and more common.

Usually happens more when the car/engine is cold, when the weather is cold and/or damp, and happens mostly on acceleration/gear change/steering mix for examply when turning at a junction. The tighter the turn, generally the louder and more prolonged the noise. Sometimes it will do it a lot, other days not a peep out of it!

My garage is stumped - they have checked all sorts of things...the bearings, power steering fluid levels, rear brakes are all new about 2 months ago, handbrake discs are fine, engine mounts have been checked etc etc (sorry I don't know much about cars so don't remember the other things!) but they can't track it down. The handling is perfect, no loss of performance or behaviour at all, just this increasingly common whine/moan. Sometimes it is very loud and I am very concerned!

Anyone have any ideas please? It has been in 4-5 times now and no progress made. I am waiting for it to need the AA :)

Thanks!
Alex

Alex,

From the description of the noise and where it sounds to be from it sounds like possible steering pump/belt but I'd expect the garage to have checked this.

The Boxster has only one belt at the front of the engine which goes around all of the belt driven services, the power steering pump is on top of the engine and from the driver's seat this will sound like noise from the nearside rear. If the belt is worn smooth it can squeal or whine when under load, especially when cold. Steering especially to the full lock will increase this.

Is the garage you use familiar with Porsches? If not find one which is.

Hiya

Thanks for the reply. Yeah they checked the power steering pump, all seems fine there. I will let them know what you have said though about the worn belt (although I seem to remember something about a belt being taken off and checked!) Yes they are very familiar with Porsche, thanks, although not a main dealer. I don't like paying the main dealer prices unless I have to!

Alex

A new belt is about £20-£25 and if you use club discount most dealers will post it to you with 10% off.

GSF or Eurocarparts can also supply.

Belt tensioner rollers can dry out their bearings, Tensioners are about £45

I had a nasty whine from the passenger at high speed....

On investigation it was found to be my wife in the passenger seat....
