Problems Filling Petrol Tank

Since having my 996 I have noticed a similar probelm that I used to have on my BOXSTER.

I am having to fill the tank very slowly to avoid the pump cutting out when filling up.

Never had the problem on my 964 or 993 !

Turn the nozzle upside down.

And you will have a similar problem - everything in front of the windscreen is basically identical, apart from the diff making the luggage compartment smaller [;)]

Mark ... No help to you but I am on Boxster No.4 and they all filled up perfectly cutting out at about 3.5 litres before being completely full!

I have 2 MINI Cooper "S" and they both cut out 12- 15 litres before full and have to be trickled (pain in the ars*) filled to the max so I know what you are experiencing and hope you get it sorted but I must say I have owned 8 Porsche since 1978 and never had a filling issue at all......Good luck
 
I find this is increasingly a problem.
It seems to be the newer pumps. The flow rate is so high that the fuel has not got the chance to get in to the tank - it just trips the auto cut-off all the time.

Really really annoying[:mad:]

Mark ... The flow appears higher as you say, and the Super seems to foam a lot more but having said that a gentle trigger finger and I have no probs at all with the Porsche ... MINI is another story as it wants almost a zero flow rate for that last 12 litres or so....
 
I get to enjoy this feature twice a week when I fill up.
The issue is caused by the erquirement to fit narrow filler necks in the car, so that you can't put the larger leaded nozzle in (EU nanny state rules). Some filling stations have higher pressure pumps, it also seems to be less bad when the weather is really cold.

If you put the nozzle in so that the handle is vertically downwards, then twist the nozzle by 10-20 degrees to the font of the car, so the handle is closer to the front, then it cuts out less. On some pumps you can squeeze the trigger all the way, but mostly you struggle to get past 75%.

I have had this on the two previous cars, so have been irritated by this "feature" for the last 6+ years.

I don't think the 996 is much worse than other new cars. Obviously the straighter the filler pipe inside the car, the less chance there is for fuel to build up in the pipe, i.e. if there are loads of bends on the way to the tank the flow rate is reduced due to the increased pressure drop.
