problems starting/running

Hi all,

Hope you had a good festive period. Had the car serviced in december and has been running perfectly.

Just been down to portsmouth today, and it was running perfectly all day. no problems or anything. Came back along the A3 and didnt run out of petrol but ran maybe a bit low.

Filled up with a tenner to get me to kennington, approx five miles max, again car running totally fine. Parked up and came in for a coffee, with a view to going to the jetwash to get the grime off.

went out to start the car, it ran for about ten seconds then cut out. I tried this process a few times, same result. Then I managedd to have it running for round the block to see if all had worked itsefl out. Then it stalled again. And now it sometimes starts and runs for 5ish seconds, then stalls, or it just doesnt fire.

Really surprising seeing as its done 200 faultless miles today, didnt skip a beat.

Any ideas or suggestions would be really appreciated. [&:]

BTW, I just love dry roads in winter!

Cheers

Charlie

Sounds like the DME relay to me. You should always carry a spare one in the glove compartment. I have a spare one in each of my cars. They cost about £20.

Hi Geoff,

Cheers, firstly how do you check if its gone/faulty? I had thought it could be something to do with the immobiliser and will check that in a minute.

also can you pick these up from hellfrauds or will it be a porsche specialist parts place a la berlyn? I will need to pic a couple up is its a common fault.

Cheers

Charlie

You can get them from Euro Car Parts, or any of the usual Porsche specialists.

Bert tends to be cheapest, and you are supporting the work he does for the Club and the cars at the same time!

At less than £20 it's always worth buying a spare, you might well need it one day or be able to help a less-well educated owner....[:)]

Hi Geoff,

Cheers, firstly how do you check if its gone/faulty?

A quick and easy test is to make an emergency jumper from three bits of wire and some spade connectors and plug them in instead of the relay. This will make the fuel pump run all the time so make sure to unplug it when the car is stopped.

Full details and pics 2/3 dwn this page on Clarks Garage:

The way to check is simply fit a new one. If you have a spare then it is no problem and if you haven't, you should have so, again no problem. If the old one is OK you will not have wasted money.
I would rather drive without a spare tyre than without a spare relay.

Contact Bert at Berlyn hs is a real Gent.

Good luck.
Geoff

Cheers guys,

I agree its best practise to just have a spare, so will introduce myself to Bert tomorrow and pick a couple up. I suspect I will be getting to know him fairly well. :ROFLMAO:

Went out today to see if it would start and run and it was fine and dandy. Then it did the same little play up again. So I suspect its the relay.

So I washed it then clayed it then used autoglym ultra deep shine polish, then popped on a coat of extra gloss protection to seal it and finished her off with a coat of Dodo Juice.. mmm[:)]

Thanks again guys

Charlie

I've never seen anyone lavish so much attention on a relay :ROFLMAO:
