Problems with engine mount

Thought I'd do a nice easy job today.....Swap the n/s engine mount. Trouble is, I can't seem to get the engine high enough to squeeze the old mount out. I have dropped the crossmember slightly, as per Clarks Garage. When I jack up the engine, I can only get it up an inch or so before it starts lifting the body of the car. I have unscrewed the o/s mount from the crossmember as well.

Any suggestions? I know I could do this by dropping the crossmember - but it seems a bit of an extreme measure to fit 1 mount.

I think what I really need is another pair of eyes (and hands) on the job to try & see exactly what's going on

Very frustrating though. []

When I did mine it was a case of supporting the engine I.e not lifting then lowering x member.

Horrible job - found the clutch change easier.

Simon @ PH said they don't even touch the crossmember when they do it - just raise the engine a bit. I feel like I'm missing an obvious trick somewhere. Even when I turn the mount through 180 degrees I still can't get it out. I need about another half inch of clearance.

Usually its the O/S one thats u/s!
You may need undo/loosen the other mounts bolts and to push the engine over as well as up and use some nice big levers.
As the 944 man says its probably a job you wouldnt want to watch on you car!

Having done this myself it's a b***h, Not sure how simon does it with crossmember in place, seems i missed that trick but one thing I would say is don't bother doing just the one, do both and save yourself a lot of hassle later. Yes the O/S usually collapses first due to the heat from the exhaust manifold but the other mount will also be weak now and if you fit a new one to one side only the other will fail soon after, I've been there, done that and got the T-shirt , believe me it wasn't fun doing the job all over again a month down the road..lol
