Problems with new alternator......

Hi Guys and girls
I have a 88 carrera and recently had a problem with the alternator. It seemed to stop working which resulted in my battery acid boiling out. I had this replaced along with a new battery. However since then my engine sounds like an electric sewing machine on starting and when reving.
I did talk to my mechanic and he said was probably the fan belt which was replaced. This didn't fix the problem and the noise is even worse now.
Could this be the bearings? though seems unlikely with a new alternator...unless the exchange one was a dud.
I am not sure what to do. I live in south essex and could anyone recommend a good mechanic who is used to 911 3.2's please.
Also while I am here has anyone had the rear window replaced on their cabriolet as my hood is in excellent condition. Was opened on a freezing day and cracked!!! quite stupid....

many thanks Tim

It sounds like the voltage regulator. I had exactly the same thing happen with mine, replaced the regulator and that cured it, plus of course a new battery !
cheers, Nick.
