Procedure for replacing sunroof gears? ?

Guys - I have researched the sunroof gear issues for my 88' 944 and have had it apart many times, the cable moves from posistion to position correctly although havent checked the torque on the slipper clutch as yet.

I have two sets of the nylon gears just incase.

I understand that I need to install the new gears then run the cable back through the guide, but I would like confirmation as to what position the motor / stroke cable needs to be in when I install the lifting arms? Obviously my main concern it to make sure when in the closed position the roof is completely closed with no gaps, which makes me lean towards installing the lifting arms when the motor / cable is in the closed position. Or do I have the motor almost to the fully closed position then install the lifting arms / roof in the fully closed position relying on the slipper clutch to do it's thing pulling the roof down that extra little way for a really tight seal?

I hope this makes sense, and I also hope this weekends front wheel bearing change is easier to do!

regards . . .

no need to make it so complicated! there's no need to touch the cable.

1. get the roof out.
2. remove the rear inner trim panel (7 screws)
3. remove the cover on each of the housings exposed on the roof.
4. pull down the guides.
5. hey presto, gears exposed.
6. replace and put back together.

IIRC, you must make sure that you put the guides in in the position that they came out. i.e. if you had the roof guides down to relaease the roof, then make sure they go in that way again.

TIP: once you've replaced the gears, the guides and the plate, try the roof. it may not line up absolutely correctly, in which case just remove the cover, and move the guide up or down 1 tooth, or to fine tune, install the gear a couple of teeth furtherround. when you're happy, then replace the roof panel. BE CAREFUL WHEN CLOSING THE ROOF the first ttime. if you're a mile out, i think it'll try to rip the gears apart as it closes.

But then again, it has been a while since mine last went (touch wood).

you can find a write-up on www.clarks-garage.com aswell. It's probably better than mine! [:D]
