Products for hood?

Hi,

Following a friends recommendation I have always used the Autoglym kit (cleaner and reproofer) see this link but its available from local stoes including Halfords. http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/autoglym/cabriolet-fabric-hood-cleaning-kit.aspx

Whilst I do keep the 987 in a garage it seems to keep the water beading on the fabric for absolutely ages (well over a year).

I also tried the AutoGlym kit and it's very good, but a tad expensive, (circa £25), when you consider you only get two or three treatments from one kit.

An alternative is to clean the hood using a small soft(ish) brush and plenty of warm water and AutoGlym car shampoo, then rinse well, let it dry and re weather-proof it with a product such as "Fabsil" which available from Outdoor activity retailers and is used for waterproofing tents.

I think it's available in liquid and spray form. The liquid is better as you can apply it with a small paintbrush or sponge to avoid over-spray on paintwork and windows.

From memory, it's about £10 for a 1litre can which is good for about 6 to 8 treatments of a Boxster roof.

Renovo do 3 products for hood maintenance - shampoo, colour and waterproofer. Not cheap, but very good. It's what I used on my 968 cab when I got it last year. I've also read good reports of the AG kit.

If using the colourant, be warned. It's thinner than water and gets everywhere, so mask everything off very carefully and do not let any dry on the paintwork, it's a swine to get off. Boot lid drain channel was the one that I swore about - toothbrush and paint restorer to get it off!

The instructions say do not fold the hood for at least 24 hours after treatment - and they are correct. Fold the hood early and you get lovely light fold marks in your newly coloured hood (guess how I know!!).

Hope you're not in a hosepipe ban area, you need lots of water to rinse the hood after using the shampoo!

I've just had a new hood fitted by Car Hood Warehouse to a Boxster S - they also recommended Autoglym

the Autoglym kit is available through eBay or Amazon at circa £15 - cheaper than the £25 through Halfords or whoever.

The thing about the autoglym kit is that the spray proofer gets everywhere (especially if there is a breeze)

Having used both, I personally like Renovo because you can apply with a brush. Quick and simple.

The way the water beads is excellent as well.

Renovo can get everywhere too - after giving my hood a good shampoo and rinse and letting it dry, I applied the colourant and then the sealant with a foam brush, thought I'd masked everything off adequately - wrong!! The colourant is thinner than water and gets everywhere, 1 year on and I'm still finding spots of it (blue) on my Tahoe Blue paintwork! Moral of the story - Mask up like crazy with 3M blue masking tape and paper.

I tend to ignore the instructions for distance to hold the proofer spray away from the hood I much prefer to evenly spread it out with the cleaning sponge rather than drift it all over the place.
