Project budget porker track toy

Thought I'd share my little project with you & hope you can give me some hints & tips along the way.

Ethos- budget & the big emphasis here is on budget, a reliable & cheap to maintain track toy, really not going to see much daily road use, but I do like to do European track days so drive to & from. Wont see much 'ring use as I keep a car there, but it might see a few sneaky laps I suppose [;)]

Engine swaps & expensive mods are thus not on the cards, I've had faster track cars, but the costs all rise, really need to keep the costs down with this one.

Ok the base is a good 'un, stumbled upon a cracking 924S 114k & body free of rot, have had enough 944s in my time & none were this clean if im honest.

The expensive bits have already been done.

New EMC Engine- 944 lux spec
Leda coilovers
Full cage

Best bit is not only did it cost not very much, but that all that lot has done a mere 3k miles & a single track day & 5 of sprinting, sweet.
Oh & its got a particually foul blue steering wheel too [:D] feels great, just looks shocking [:-] will be changed soon.

Done 200 miles & yep suspension is proper firm, & its no rocket esp as im used to a similar weight but near 300bhp, but 1st impressions are good, its 8 yrs since I had a 944 lux & I loved that little thing.

So a couple of pics

So 1st up= shove it on the scales & see what she weighs. with just under 1/4 tank & full trim.

DSCN2479.jpg

Dont pay to much attention to the weight splits, not sure the floor where I did it was entirely level, will be done later on level ground as project progresses & sorted if needed.

Guessed at 1200=

1226!! you fat git, right lets get some of that easy to remove lard out straightaway[:D]

Track strip phase one-

Ah thats a bit better-

1185

DSCN2481.jpg

On warm days I'll run minus the sunroof- bloomin' thing weighs 10 kg! so 1175kg without it

DSCN2478.jpg

So next on the cards-

- Race pads & new race fluid (but may see how the new but standard pads get on)
- Bucket seats
- More weight loss (I'm after a grp bonnet & plexi hatch if you have them)
- Dyno to see start point before any engine fiddles
- Proper cage padding

Nice project Alex, it would be great to get it under 1100kg

But can it match our old GPL favourite [;)]

Just dying to be supercharged!!! Looks like great project. Keep us posted!

Noooooo I have another occasionally tracked toy thats supercharged & its great, but one hairdryer power on the drive is enough [:D] & its N/A all the way with this beasty

Great project and an interesting read. In the wrong forum though, surely?

Fair point, I'd like it left here if pos, mainly as 924 forum is v quiet & I've got lots of help off this one & a 924S is just a 944 lux in her plain jane clothes rather than her 1980s shoulder padded party frock anyway [;)]

Would love to get to under a ton, but don't really think thats feasable with what I want to spend, so sub 1100 is indeed more realistic.

GPL not me tho squire, last computer game I played was PacMan circa 1988 [:D]

You want to get a look at Simon's early 944 (SAR classics - http://www.essentialstyling.com/), he has cut a lot of metal out and swapped the dash for jubilee clips holding the instruments to the column - You might not want to go as far but its good inspiration!

Do you know what power the engine delivers? Is it standard 944?

I suppose you could try changing it for a 2.7 (more torque) but you said that engine swaps were out of the question. EMC built a few 944 2.5 race carsd a few years ago as part of an attempt to develop a big brother series to the 924 series/ IIRC there was a cam swp which upped power to about 190 Bhp. Could be worth investigating.

I belive its to 944 spec, will be put on rollers soon to get a baseline figure, I'm looking at the emc racers as inspiration, I know they got 190bhp at hitechs rollers, 180ish bhp is my hope, but not just yet.

I wouldnt rule out a swap if something happened to this lump in the future, but when you've got a new emc fully rebuilt lump with 3k miles on, I'd be mad to get rid of it yet.

Bit more weight loss yesterday, another 13kg gone, all under carpet & bulkhead soundproofing removed- I'll be keeping the carpets as they weigh naff all.

Need to find whats been getting it damp on pas side too.

Update, she did Goodwood & Snetterton fautlessly last yr, Got Oulton in 2 wks so a good check over today, needs discs & thats all.

So the sub 1100kg was mentioned above, well Corner weighted again today= current weight 1125kg with only a splash of fuel, the lighter 15inch teledial wheels, 205/50 888s & no sunroof.

So 100kg lost from when I got it & its still got carpets, all steel panels, all glass, standard battery & even a stereo! :)

The next weight loss won't be as cheap unfortunatly, guess 1050 is posible easily if not cheaply, sub tonne perhaps if I went weight loss mental.

Searched for a plexi rear hatch everywhere, easier to find Osama bin liner I think!

Fitted induction kit purely for noise, got via a request on this forum cheers, as it sounded like a tumble dryer before, may remove 1 silencer soon also, was a mere mouse fart 89db at Snett & Goodwood! so can afford a bit more noise.

Been thinking of selling this old girl, does a man really need 4 trackday cars! [:)] but after a quick blat in her today hmm can I do it.... best get her to Oulton in 2 wks & see how I feel.

If a man feels he needs four trackday cars then he needs four trackday cars. Does that answer the question? [&:]

(I'm jealous. I've never owned as much as one ... )

Oli.

Too many toys & just bought another doh! so shes in the for sale section.

Anyone at Oulton on Fri come & say Hi

I will be at Oulton what wiil you be there in, going with my matey in his GT3 mK 1, 944'S still in hibernation !

I was in the 924.

Epic day car was fab & never missed a beat in a 200 miles day with up to 40 mins sessions & to conclude this thread shes now sold.

Enjoyed it heck of a lot & for Oulton it was mega, never missed beat in nearly 1000 flat out track miles, just topped up the oil, I just felt I needed a tad more bhp at other tracks tho.

I was contemplating just keeping the old gril but got a good offer so lost nowt & had a free year of trackdays.

Bit of vid from pals car- early session & I get hunted down here- by my apex missing chum [:D]

She'll be off to live with its new owner near Snetterton now.

Thatll easily go under 1100 kilos without costing a great deal. Oddysey battery, polycarbonate windows and hatch (I have two, but Im reluctant to part with one, as theyre seldom available); fit a GRP bonnet and remove the rear wiper, NS window regulator and the electric hatch release and the sunroof motor...

Lightness thats the key.

The quest for power is always there but lightness maketh the car

A very rough rule of thumb I have heard over many years is that 50kg weight loss is worth 10bhp. Unsprung weight loss has greater dynamic effects.

Been thinking of selling this old girl, does a man really need 4 trackday cars!

What are these other cars then [8D]
