I've vacillated for some time now but finally decided to bite the bullet and play around with some upgrades.

Decision driven by economic conditions, so I'll keep the car longer, plummeting second hand values (so I'll keep the car even longer) and the cost for the new extended warranty and related restrictions have decided me

Whats going on

  • Revo Re-map plus possibly the stage 2, which allows several different mapping options
  • Miltech Exhaust, keeping the Porsche Sports Box but changing the rest
  • Induction Kit and Filter
  • Upgraded Brakes - Racing Break Fluid and EBC Yellow Pads
Result should be 330 - 340hp with a similar hike in torque - through the range rather than at the top ens so this is all about improved drive ability and in gear punch as opposed to outright top end grunt. Also much better breaking capability to keep the extra power in check.

Having looked around, chewed over this for ages and talked to lots of people this is basically all you can do if you want the reliability and drive ability to remain, unless of course I want to go down the Turbo Charging/Supercharging route but this would ruin the character oft he car.

This should give me a little over 300bhp/tonne, with relatively short gearing this could be fun. No external differences can be seen with these changes and everything can be reversed out to standard Porsche parts for re-sale.

I'll let you know whats its like when its done.

Watch this space.

Hi Tom

All sounds great.

Not sure you got the power numbers right though as given you have 381bhp now, your new numbers are much lower!

Good luck with your new toys, I am loving my changes and I will be corrupting Rennteam 997 owners tomorrow for our meet near Goodwood!

as you say alex-i presume tom means now 430-440 hp -sounds good[:D]

i must say i am thinking along similar lines given current economics

Yes the typo's got me

Re-map gets you from Powerkits Minimum of 385bhp to approx 400-410hp, Induction & exhaust combined gets you another 25-35hp.

Interestingly the Powerkit conversion quotes a minimum power not a target value so most of the engines produce a bit more when they run in and are not de-tuned (to meet the specified power)

So confident of 430, probably between 430 & 440 possibly the nauty side of 440 ie between 300 and 309 BHP/Tonne

Yep did a calculation of cost of new warranty and the inconvenience of everthing havong to be done by OPC, even with naff replacement parts. If they had kept the original warranty I would have stayed with it and may have done a bit less to the car but at £1400/year thats roughly 1.8 rms' year, Gearbox/Clutch will never be warranty and for an engine failure it depends upon what it is but you might have more recourse than you realise

I've looked at these changes as enhancements to the exisiting character of the car so the guts of the engine I am leaving well alone, the breaks are great but for the extra 90hp felt a bit more bite on the pads would help.

The race fluid will mitigate a propblem I had at Stelvio - watre contamination and altitude plus 20 miles of mostly 1st gear driving temporarilly boiled off the clutch/break fluid...

Hi Tom,

Well it's great to know that you're out there pioneering for the rest of us!! I too have the X51 and so will follow your remap progress with interest - please keep us posted. By way of a brake upgrade myself I'm looking into a PCCB retrofit but that's likely to cost as much as everything else put together, although I suppose I could look upon it as spending my way out of the gloom just like our government!

All the best, John

Tom, very interesting list of mods. Have you considered using Tech 9 Motorsport, they'll be able to carry out all this work and optimise power output with a TechArt re-map and then warranty all the work through their alternative extended warranty scheme which will be around half the price of Porsche's new extended warranty prices.

Tom, I know Phil Hindley MD of Tech 9 well and what he and his team don't know about Porsche is not worth knowing. They've done all the mods to my car which includes the GT3 aerokit, FVD Brombacher sports exhaust, EVOMS V-Flow induction system, and TechArt lowering springs, 20" Formula GTS alloys and re-map. They have their own underwritten warranty product (similar to Porsche's own extended warranty, but cheaper) which will cover all their work and any other mods you declare.

Fingers crossed the beast is going in for its upgrades next week, looking forward to seeing if the changes are noticable[:D]
