Prophetic Vision.....

Anyone know the song 'Red Barchetta' by the rock band Rush ? ( an early 80's song if I remember correctly ). Great band by the way, check them out.

Its set in the future when all petrol engined cars are banned and its an imprisonable offence to drive one.

The time is coming, mark my words. Latest nonsense from the EU will effectively put all sportscar manufacturers out of business in 2012 as max emission is proposd to be 120kg/C02.

I agree that something has to be done to tackle global emissions but this is missing the point.

Most effective way would be to invade China, take over and shut down all the filthy pollouting industry there and establish a completely new green economy.

Simple really.

Yves

Don't know about you but if the legislation on drivers in this country gets much worse then I am emigrating to the US.

Pick up a Turbo there for a 1/3 of the price off compared to here too!

Hi Yves
Yep, good to know someone else bought the album! It's off the Rush album 'Moving Pictures' circa 1983 (I think) and is based on a novel called 'A nice mornings drive' by R Foster. The album is one of their best, with the instrumental track 'YYZ' a testament to their musical prowess.
Here is a link for the lyrics to Red Barchetta if you're interested:

Yep,

I'm with you there Alex. We were thinking of heading off in the other direction, New Zealand or Oz.

Rob,

Nice to know there are some proper music fans still around !

A Farewell to Kings is probably my favourite.

Guess what I am going to be adding to the ipod tonight !

China and the EU, both lesser polluters than the USA, have one thing in common: They are both committed to further reducing their rate of emissions. Despite economic growth China has cut emissions by 17% since the mid 1990s. The odd one out is the USA. Immensely richer than China, but with less population than Europe, it emits more harmful chemicals than both of them. In addition, it has so far stubbornly refused to endorse international protocols designed to reduce such emissions.

I'm always curious when I'm made to feel evil about my CO2 footprint when I go abroad on holiday and / or business... how large must the CO2 footprint of a fighter jet be??? All those after burners must emit enough CO2 to be equivalent to thousands of 911s.

[] Personally I would like someone to disprove the fact Global warming has happened in early times before saying its all our current inhabitants fault. I beleive we are speeding it up but even if we all stopped any additional pollution above Cow Bottom burps etc. I believe it will only slow the inevitable up. Unless we all want a new millenia where we farm the land and walk everywhere our best bet is to try to invent suitable technology to minimise emissions and not suddently tax us all to death or regulate us into a new lifestyle. End of apolitical statement. Sorry but it does all annoy me! [] [:D]

Hi Yves
Your mention of Farewell To Kings really took me back to my (largely mis-spent I'm pleased to say!) youth - I'd forgotten about that one, so I'm off to rummage through my old vinyl in the attic to get it out and listen to 'Madrigal' - very laid back![8D]
I've been trying to find 'Archives' on CD but no joy so far (cassette on Amazon is the best so far) as I lent my vinyl copy to a chum in the mid 80's and never got it back.
Enjoy the tunes!![;)]
Rob

(apologies to anyone reading this who is confused by the Rush fan club here on a Porsche forum - still, a bit of diversity is good for the soul![:D])

Rob,

Lets not forget 2112 and Hemispheres !

The perfect accompanyment ( nental block, cant spell that ) to the technical excellence of the 911.

It happens every few millenia.
We're currently "between" ice ages.

One day they'll ask a geologist...

There is also something of a solar ice that effects this every frwe thousand or tens of thousands of years - apparently we were due a bit of a cool down.

Some one did a study and worked out if in the UK we gave up sports cars, SUV's etc for low emmisisons vehicles the change would only be to redue the rate of increase over one year ie it wouldn't stop polution growth.

Key issues - Amount of electricity we consume industrially and domesticaaly andt he amount of freight we transfer by air. I was in Costa Rica recently feeling a liitle bit bad about my airflights carbon footptrint and found they were growing strawberrys on mass - whena sked they told me it was o FLY tot he UK for a major UK store (every little helps). Now that is madness - and its enabled byt hef act there is no levey on aviation fuel so it effectivly wroks out cheaper to fly things than take them by rail, canal or truck.

Those laughing in low emissons vehicles with baarery's shouldn't the carbon footprint + polution for creating the car, batteries fort h lifre of he car and the disposal oft he car and its highly toxic battery waste is apparently far higher than any other road vehicle.

Rant over - Were thinking of Canada or Ausralia to escape the nutties here!

Much more improtant - hold your fire was probably the best thing they did but I still ahve a huge soft spot for Power windows and permanent Waves (Spirit of Radio)

Hmm time to change the CD's in the beast.....
