PSE drive by (Gen 2)

Just been shown how easy it is to disconnect the plug that ensures the increased exhaust sound is muted at town speeds.
Simple in a 911, more difficult in a Cayman or Boxster as the engine cover has to be removed.
Here you see the plug connected.
The plug will need a gentle push forwards and at the same time a silver clip in the plug
will need pushing to the left and then pull the plug off whilst keeping the silver clip pushed in.
It will be a little tight and sometimes it is easier to use two hands.
Once the plug is disconnected, the PSE dashboard switch becomes inoperative
Having disconnected the mute facility and also ensuring that the PSE is always operative, the plug can easily be
reconnected for long motorway journies where peace and quite is required.

On seeing your post I went down to the garage and poped the boot to have a look myself and for the life of me I can't see how you'd get your hands in there to take that off.
 
The plug and solenoid appear to be identical to that used on the gen 1 997 and Boxster / Cayman. I fitted a bypass switch to my PSE by installing an in line plug and switch. The beauty of this modification is that it allows the PSE to be controlled by a separate switch inside the car and still has the benefits of bypassing the 20-40 mph cut out. The switch can be mounted in various locations , one of the most popular is inside the ashtray , this requires the bare minimum of modification and is probably the easiest to route the wires to. Since the switch is connected to the existing wiring harness via its own mini loom using plugs , there is no cutting of wires required and everything can be reversed with no visible signs. Once fitted you no longer need to get your hands dirty or risk damaging the plug by taking it on or off for certain conditions (ie when the car gets serviced or a long journey) With the new switch closed the PSE operates as per original with the 20-40 mph cut out and control from the main console. With the switch open the PSE remains permanently active , the original switches on the dashboard are now bypassed. This modification has been successfully installed on my own car, a cayman and a 997 gen 1 , I have details of the install and a few spare kits of parts if anyone is interested.

When I asked this question at the OPC they were very tight lipped and wouldnt say anything about it.
 
Not surprising. Porsche agents get their knuckles rapped if they modify a car thats not listed in a specific tech bulletin from Porsche AG. The reason being , if you later have an issue or were to get stopped in Germany for a loud exhaust they would be liable.
