On my 997 Targa 4S gen 1
Why does the PSE go into quite mode between about 25 to 45 mph ? is there any reason for this either environmentaly or other ?

This was also the case on my 996 but had the wire disconected so when you operated the switch it was open or closed.

can this be done on my 997 with sport chrono ?, and if so will it cause any problems with the normal running of the car and the all important Porsche warranty ?.

I believe it's to satisfy the drive by noise regs. The brown (or I think it's actually black!) plug can be disconnected so that the exhaust is permanently in loud mode. If you know where to look I think this is relatively easy to do and does not affect the driving of the car (apart from the extra pleasure, of course!). It can also easily be reconnected anytime you want to take it near a dealership. I'm sure someone around here will have photo of the appropriate area of the engine![;)]

With the plug on it does indeed control the noise level for town driving and also just prior to 4000rpm. The plug is at the top right of the engine bay and it is a caramel brown colour. If you push the small electric clip in and then pull the plug off (hold the bracket with the other hand) you will be in full noise mode. If you then push the plug back on as far as the now released clip will let it go, it will not re-engage the electrics but it will help to stop crud getting in. Just wrap a length of insulating tape around to help the seal and ensure it does not fall off and get filled with crud. It is recommended that you replace the plug and switch the exhaust to noisy mode every 1500 - 2000 miles to excercise the flaps as they can seize open (although I am happy if mine do that coz the exhaust note is really great and around 20% louder across the rev range. Finally GO find a tunnel or a tall wall to drive by and give it the berries [:D] Cheers Paul

I made up a bypass kit to allow the PSE to be controlled independantly of the sport button or PSE button thus overiding the 25-40 mph cut out. Its a simple plug in wiring loom , with aswitch on one end , so it doesnt damage or affect any of the original wiring. If left in the off position it would be undetectable by porsche. I've already supplied a couple of kits to cayman and gen 1 997 owners who are more than happy with the personalised control.
