Puddle Trauma

Afternoon all

Got stuck out in a monsoon yesterday and ended up going through a rather large puddle after which the car spluttered and cut out. For the next 10 mins it would fire off the key and then splutter at low revs and cut out. After a fair bit of perseverance it gradually came back to life enough to get home but my AFR,s seem all over the place and it's defo not running right. What have I soaked that needs attention?

Cheers

It seemed dry. But there was some water in the snorkel so some may have got through. Dizzy cap dry. Car is running but super lean. Looks like my MAF has had it. Idling about 15/16 on AFR gauge, used to be 13/14. Leans out worse higher up rev range but strangely seems to be driving fine. I suppose it could be my wideband that's chucked it but I fear the worst for my MAF. I'll take it out later when back home and see what's what. Pretty sure it's not serviceable in any way right enough. Would be handy to have an AFM to throw on but my old one got lost at Alastair's garage many years ago. I knew that would come back to haunt me one day!

Pretty sure the MAF is goosed. Running ultra lean. I've been told that when the type of MAF I have fails it fails lean. Had it apart but nothing you can do really. Got a few part numbers to Google and see if I can get a new hot wire element for it. If not its either back to an AFM or it would need to be a vitesse set up. Not mad keen on reverting back to a barn door. Time for a look about!

So the MAF sensor involved on the SciVision is a Bosch 028 217 531. This seems used on a few Alfa's, Fiat's and Lancia's. Available brand new for about £100-£140. Then found a guy selling brand new aftermarket equivalent of it for £28 Inc free delivery. Ordered one. Fingers crossed!

So the MAF sensor was indeed gubbed. My cheap clone arrived today. It seems to idle a bit rich 11.5/12 on the AFR gauge, but it drives well enough and reacts quick enough. AFR's are fine when driving but I would say about 1 richer than before. Cruise used to be 14's and is now 13's. Fine on WOT. I wonder if a proper Bosch air flow sensor would fix the idle issue or if the SciVision controller maybe needs calibrated to the new air flow sensor. Any bright sparks able to answer that?? Either way the car is perfectly driveable and is now not lean in any way!

All fixed now guys. The cheapo MAF made the car driveable, but too rich. Slightly rich cold idle, slightly rich throughout revs, tad slow to react and chokingly rich at warm idle. New Bosch one arrived today, fitted and she is running sweet as a nut again!! Very happy indeed and a reminder that Bosch is best over cheapo copies every time!

So glad I never destroyed anything else whilst puddle surfing, was starting to fear the worst, thinking I'd be chasing faults for a long time.

Good news though and the cheapo MAF at least let me know my original MAF was gubbed and also the cheapo MAF vendor has agreed to a refund as not fit for purpose. Result for me and a happy ending!
