Pulling a trailer

Hi all

Controversial I know but a friend of mine wants a 993 model Porker but also needs to know its capabilities in terms of pulling a trailer. Has anyone here had any experience of pulling a trailer in a 993.

The trailer they had in mind can be seen in the following url - fairly sizeable to say the least!!

http://www.trailers.freeserve.co.uk/WORD-ENCL-TRAILERS.htm

Many thanks - much appreciated

Richard

NO WAY surely he's not going to ruin the rear of the car with a tow bar... it shouldn't be allowed you have to stop him.

I maybe wrong, but I didn't think trailer weights were listed in the Owners Manual for good reason - i.e. You can't attach a tow bar! It's bl..dy sacrilege anyway

That's what i thought the response would be - never mind!!

I'll try to persuade him to get an RS4 or something similar

My colleage here in my office has a nice rare RS2 for sale in blue.

Let me know if your friend would like his contact dets.

I seem to remember an article in 911 & Porsche world about 2 or 3 months ago about an american who likes to tow his yacht with an old 911. it's possible...

Thanks for the info Maurice - i'll pass it on.

Also thanks to WillD for mentioning the RS2 - sorry - beginning to sound like the Oscars [:(]

For fun, I asked at OPC Guildford about whether it was possible to tow something with my old C4S (996 not 993).

They mentioned that there is no official Porsche option or accessory to fit. This is why no trailer weights, towing figures appear in the documentation.
However, if I reallywanted one, they said they would suggest a place that would do it. Apparently it had been done on other cars (but I don't think he meant 911, more 928, 944 I believe).
I don't know where they would attach it, since you need to get to the chassis without obstructing the engine, exhausts, etc. which need to be able to dropped down for servicing.

I remember an article years ago in a Christophorus entitled "A thoroughbred doing Carthorse duty?" which discussed towing with a Porsche (not sure why it stuck in my mind). Given the origins of Christophorus it's likely that there was at one time a Porsche option towbar!

(Won't be a 993 though! - given that I got my Christophorus through a s/h bookstore and that I was still at school my best estimate would be about 1983 - SC era)

I thought I had read that the 993 was never approved to tow trailers because Porsche never got the appropriate official TUV approval (or whatever it's called in each country). You can't blame Porsche for not bothering.

Therefore I am not sure you could get a 993 insured when towing a trailer as the car has never been approved for that type of role.

A 993 .... towing a trailer ..... complete sacrilege IMHO.

Nice one Sundeep!!!!!

There wasa 3.2 at the Festival campsite with a caravan.........

Frankly, I don't think you'd get the ground clearance without hacking the rear bumper.

PS May I take this oppurtunity to suggest you contact Flying Blue Dog Trailer Services. Cars dead or alive moved with care on BJ 1.5tonne trailer (ond NOT behind a Porker!!!) [:D]

For info, a tow bar used to be available on earlier 911. I actually still have mine for a Carrera 74 (so would fit all other 911 of this generation as well). It is homologated and Porsche stampted and quite clever has the visible part of it is actually detachable. We use to drive the car with the sytem fitted to it and nobody ever noticed (apart for a couple of times when we were towing an empty horse-box and overtaking people at amazing speed up the hills on the French motoways - we could not stop laughing at the other drivers' faces !!!!).

THIS IS MY FIRST POST HERE AND I AM FUMING BECAUSE YOUR MATE WANTS TO PULL A TRAILER WITH A 911! NO WAY, MAN! BUY A CAYENNE IF YOU WANT TO PULL A TRAILER!

Obviously I see where you're coming from but I'm just happy that my mate is even considering a Porsche and not going for the bog standard boring diesel estates - fyi - a Cayenne is out of his price range. I knew this thread would attract abuse!! And fair enough too!! [:(]
