Purchase Advice - Bumpers?!

Hi

I'm considering adding an early Cayenne to the fleet for family duties. Having been burned by IMS failure in my Boxster I am keen to avoid engine issues hence a 3.2 would be more likely than the 4.5. (circa 05-06)

Bit of a strange question, but I want a factory standard car but am a little confused by whether the lower bumpers should be colour coded or black?

Several cars that i have seen seem to have the textured lower bumper painted, but I always thought these were black when they left the factory.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks in advance

I have an 05 Cayenne 4.5. I had one small problem with the abs sensor but other than its been a fantastic car. It's very heavy car though so the 3.2 I think would be too underpowered.

I'm not sure what IMS is but if it's a coil problem then Porsche replaced these free of charge ages ago so just make sure it's been done on the car you buy as they will need doing in most cases.

Bumper wise, my car is black anyway and everything is colour coded. The low bumper is in the same paint as the rest of the car.

If it's any different then it might be a replacement which means it's had a bump. Steer clear I would.

I M S is engine main bearing seal issues and I have not heard it affecting Cayennes of any type. The only issue I have heard of is some air suspension issues which are very expensive to repair, but being a Porsche any major faults will always be expensive. Using independents will help as the car will be out of warranty.
Can say so far I have not regretted owning mine one second. A good friend of mine is a Porsche buyer for a massive group and he said it's the car he most finds people with many cars in their private fleet drive the most and I agree, great all-round car.

The lower bumpers on my 2004 S are black plastic. I got the rear painted body colour but my painter said not to do the front as it would get chipped etc. I've 102,000 miles on mine ( I did 60 K) over 7 years and only problem was broken / rusted LH headlight support bracket ( £300) and Carden Shaft (£800) and recently new Clutch ( £1200), all done by OPC.

Thanks for the great advice. They seem to be excellent all rounders and great value for money

Apologies for the confusion, I'm aware the IMS failures don't effect Cayennes just the M96 / 97 Boxster and 911 engines. I have however heard that the 4.5 can suffer from bore scoring, requiring an expensive rebuild / replacement. I'm keen to avoid that!!

Just need to wait for the right, well cared for car now. Never easy when you are a fussy buyer like me!! Ha ha

Martyn,
I bought my 4.5 on the basis that there was little difference in fuel consumption between the two, but that the 3.6 was underpowered. Mine is an October 2005 S, bought in June 12 with 64k on the clock. Now has 88k and not missed a beat! Fantastic car, brilliant to drive and a joy to own. Just need to bear in mind that being a Porsche, if something does go wrong, it won't be cheap. But that's part of the deal, I suppose!

The original Kn had Black front and rear under spoilers and black under side sills
They changed to body colour when then had the first minor revision in 2004/5 ish
