Purchase of C2S ffrom non OPD

Hi

I am in the process of purchasing a C2S from a local dealer, it is on a 54 plate and covered 20K miles with full Porsche service history. I am getting it for about 5k less that OPD prices. My question is should I purchase an extended warranty. Sytner Edinburgh are quoting me £360+vat to carry ou the checks plus any work that needs done and about £900 for the warranty. Help advice needed.
 
I would definately get the warranty as you will get very little goodwill from the opc if you have a problem having bought elsewhere. You should be able to deal on the inspection fee!

my opnion is that you would be mad not to get it ,especially as you havent bought thru opc-as you say,you have saved £5k-spend some on the warranty and it`ll be well spent
 
Get the warranty.

I got a two-year Auto Protect one when I bought from Christopher Neil in Northwich.
 
I spoke to the OPC today and they suggested that irrespective of the condition of the car after inspection I would have to spend £2k with them before they would give me the warranty. Do you recommend guys the OPC warranty or do some of the specialists offer an equivalent. Thanks for the advice so-far it is making me think.
 
definately go for the opc warranty.i dont understand the 2k spend .if the car passes the 111 pt test then they should give you the warranty for a yr in exchange for £890 thereabouts(is my understanding)
 
2k for what precisely?
At £895 the warranty is debatable (I have one), at £2k+£895 it's a joke, you can get a used 997 3.6 engine from Ebay for around 3k, so unless you are convinced your engine and gearbox are going to explode within the year I wouldn't bother.

Go to www.hartech.org and get their warranty, it's/they are very well respected.
 
Sorry, but at the risk of appearing provacative, what's goodwill got to do with it if you take your non-OPC purchased car to an OPC for a repair or service? They're hardly going to turn you away are they?! They haven't turned me away yet! Nice valet from them at Christmas mind, reckon it was cos they were quiet, usually it's hardly worth the bother [:mad:]

On the one hand, if you're saving £5k then a £900 investment seems to make some sense. But on the other hand, I am in a complete minority - I didn't extend my warranty and never do on anything I buy, cars or whatever. It's basically a bet and the odds are firmly fixed in the vendor's favour. I work for a well known manufacturer and vendor of something 100% of you own or use, and we make considerably more on the warranty than the product. If we can get people to extend, it's virtually cash in the bank.

I don't mean to be patronising or self-righteous, just my humble opinion of course. Probably come back to bite me now [&:]

the porsche is the ONLY thing i extend the warranty on so i hope I am not depriving you of too much livelihood[:D]
 
My '54 plate C2S had its RMS replaced earlier this year after 18000 mi under warranty at my OPC - the cost of which more or less equalled the extended warranty cost.
Not suprisingly I have renewed it for a further year!

A warranty is basically insurance against something major going wrong.

Clearly you don't expect this to cost the 'expected value of claims' - the warranty provider will need to cover all their expenses associated with warranty claims and also deisre to make a profit.

With a vehicle such as a Porsche, there is a very real possibility that a claim could run well into 4 figures, and possibly into 5 figures - When the 2-year warranty runs out on my 911 (March '08) I will definitely be renewing it, as the prospect of a subsequent huge bill doesn't appeal. I don't expect to need it, and by your reckoning it will therefore have been £895 down the drain......

I would anticpate the profit margin on the Porsche warranty to be very small (as a percentage) compared to that on a domestic appliance (for example). Also, compared with BMW and Audi, the Porsche warranty is a relative bargain!.

Get your OPC to do the 111-point check and renew the warranty through them - you won;t regret it!

I was firmly in the 'no warranty 'camp until my engine gave up the ghost 6 months out of warranty and 8500 miles. ( intermediate shaft failure ). To be fair Porsche had a replacement engine in the car within 8 days at a cost of £90 for consumables. But they would not give any warranty despite I had the same happen to my Boxster , same age at 13500 miles ( slipped cylinder sleeve ). The OPC said the only muscle he had was via a warranty.
 
All good points, and I do fully appreciate that if something big goes wrong it's going to cost me big bucks, but hey, that's the gamble!!

The more I write, the more I am encouraging the warranty gods to strike me down so I'm stopping right now......

Same experience here with my first Boxster (intermittent shaft failure) 2 months after renewing warranty..............


 
Offer to pay for the OPC inspection (<£150), and get the selling garage to pay for any rectification thats needed for the Porsche warranty (should be minimal if its a well kept example and the selling garage have anything about them). Then take out the Porsche warranty - will cost you £1100 tops all in this route.
 
Got my C2S yesterday. It is such a different driving experience to the Cyaman and I didn't believe how much more solid it feels the build quality is fantastic. (the Cayman is still a great car) It is almost my perfect car if I was specifying new the only things I would add are Bose, PDC and a rear wiper. The Sport Chrono package short shift and the adaptive sports seats are ace something I probably wouldn't have specified but now I have them I couldn't do without them. The telephone package is pretty good and easy to use. All in all its a great car. Now I have to approach the OPC's to get the warranty. Thanks to everyone who has given advice I will certainly post how I get on.

you are right about being different drive from the CS-thats why i think i`ll keep the cs when i get the 997 TT as i love the drive of both-if i want a downright supersonic blast its the TT but (imho),if its a twisty nippy country drive you cant beat the CS[:D]
