Purchase of Cayenne - Potential Problems

Hello All
I think my son has finally grown up. He wants to sell his BMW M3 convertible and buy a Porsche Cayenne.
He has given up trying to get all the family and baby things in the M3. His wife runs our old Ford focus which is also too small.

So he plans to spend about £8000 on a Cayenne of around 2004 vintage. It is still a lot of car for the money.
We know about the water pipe problems, random coil pack failures and central propshaft bearing failures.
We have seen some adverts for Cayennes where it states " ticking noise for the engine" or "tappet noise so price reduced".
Does any one know of tappet or cam shaft problems? What should we look out for?

Thanks of any advice or help.

A faint tapping can be an indication of a worn liner in the engine, I've been told it can sound like a tappet sound so would need looking at in greater detail, perhaps with a scope down the cylinder.

Lots to choose from that don't display these symptoms, happy hunting.

Hi Alan
Unclepezza is right, there's plenty without the 'ticking noise' so be choosy. Also, as I've said before on the subject, check all the electrics work as they can be expensive to fix.
