Push rod (gas strut?) part of the convertible top mechanism...

Hi,

New member here.

Just bought a 1997 Boxster.

Its mint but there are a few things to tidy up.

There is a push rod (part number 986 561 579 00) that attaches to the convertible top drive transmission/gearbox. It looks like a gas strut with a ball joint at one end and a pin+bush connector at the other end.

This strut appears to have the ability to expand a little via an internal spring (I guess).

My question is, what is the rating of this strut? How much force should it take to extend it??

The reason I ask, is that the ball joint has sheared off. I have a new ball joint (its a pretty standard part) - but I wanted to be able to test the strut before I put it all back together because I dont know if my strut is seized up??

Cheers,

Jules

There is a spring in there. It must take a lot of force because I once put one end in a vise and pulled on the other end - to get it to extend. I could not get it to move.
