Puzzled over Brake pad shims!

I stripped down my front brakes on the S2 this morning whilst trying to sort out my ABS woes. I took the pads out of the nearside caliper, no problems just the pistons against the pads and then I took out the offside ones and there were shims either side which were fastened to the faces of the pistons when I removed the pads, should these be there and are missing from the other caliper and if so what are they for??

Cheers

They are anti noise/vibration devices.

They should come off easily if your car has the "small" (read non-M030) calipers and are not too rusty.

Well that explains why my pads squeel like mad then!! Are these a dealer only part?

Well, I am not sure if they are directly related to brake squeal (I still have some squeal on the front right brake at very slow speed yet shims are all there).
There are many people who run without them and they don't have any vibration/noise issues, so it's difficult to judge ...

You should be able to find them from any good supplier, but make sure to check which ones you need as the several changes in piston caliper diameters mean you could easily find yourself with the wrong units.

FWIW, I don't have them on my S2. When I changed the brakes the old pads had some sticky things on the back of them, that the caliper pistons had made big round dents in, and I understand that these are a cheap substitute for the Porsche-made shims you talk of. However I popped the new pads in without anything, and they work fine.

I'd say it is probably more important to have both sides the same in order that the side-to-side braking should be as equal as possible. I can't imagine that the shims would have any major effect at all on the braking performance, but it may affect pad cooling or something, and thus have a tiny effect. So, either use shims both sides, or not at all.
