Garage said the rear shock absorbers needed to be changed.

Had a wild punt on a pair of un-used shocks ( green ) on e bay and won them,

Is there any way other than driving on them - to check they;re worth fitting - pushing/pulling etc. etc. presuem if you can pull them 'open' by hand then they're shot[]??

Thanks for any help

you can push and pull shocks by hand. You should feel good stiff resistance in both directions, depending on how much of a muscle man you are the easier it will be. If you can move the piston freely with little strength they're buggered. If they look like they've been on a car for some time, covered in crud and rusty they will be an unknown quantity and could last 5 days or 5 years.

If the ones on your car were green then they are likely to be Bilsteins. You could have sent them away to be overhauled/rebuilt. They could also have been revalved to any spec you wish.
