The 356 Register report in the latest PP comes over as a bit odd, not to say patronising. Re-reading what was written about the first group of members to drive the Club 356, I can't say that I feel them to be promoting the car as "a quaint and endearing curiosity" but quite the reverse.
All had driven to the location in modern or at least modern-era Porsches and so given that contrast, their relatively short amount of driving time and the fact that most if not all had never driven the model before their fulsome praise of the car speaks for itself. All were mindful of the fact that it was not their sole property and also of its value when driving it in what were often less than ideal conditions, but I feel that all would jump at the chance to drive it again and were genuinely appreciative. I am positive that no-one was denigrating the car or its place in Porsche history, rather the opposite in fact.
I don't really understand the disparaging reference to the car as being "˜restored' either. It has certainly benefitted from some quality work of late and while it may not have had a full "˜nut and bolt' restoration, if it had done so it is unlikely that it would have been being driven by members on sometimes muddy Cotswold roads but would instead have been tucked up on display as an objet d'art rather than a car.
I don't think that anyone underestimates the importance of the 356 in Porsche history and it would be nice if those with "˜them and us' attitude problems would leave it to the rest of us to appreciate all Porsche models.
