Quality Service for 964

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to tell of the fantastic service I recieved from Porsche Centre Wilmslow. Decided to book my 964 for in for service as it had only ever been serviced in an OPC. Was quoted a price of £690 and was only charged £522. What a shocker. I was exepecting the 17 year old beast to rebuilt from the floor up (as porsche do) but the technican said he had not seen one like that for a long time. It was 3000 miles since its last service but it was 12 months ago, should I wait untill she done a few more miles I wonder?

Was given a Tip Cayman to drive and I certaintly would'nt swap. What a car this would have been in Manual form.

I will revisit Wilmslow next time for certain.

Which service was this for? Each one has different prices, so letting us know if it was a full or intermediate service would be helpful.
If yours is cheap you will hear silence and Wilmslow OPC will see a sudden upsurge in business.
If it is high, you will hear loads of people telling you where else you could have gone.

PS - Welcome to the regular world of servicing costs. As a 964 owner you will get used to paying out serious money for the 'pure joy' of owning and using your excellent car. Owners of newer cars, can go for miles without any costs and then pay just £200 odd for a service. However, I understand that they may be paying from £30,000 to £75,000 MORE than us on their cars and their cars will be dropping cash with each minute and mile. If you have a 'good one', then you may even see a rise in value of your toy. (LOL)
 
Same here Paul, pleased that OPC at Wilmslow has put a put a smile on your face and left a little spare cash in your wallet. Like Trevor said, I to would be interested to hear what the service included.?
 
I was told by the OPC there was only one service which was a 12k service. I know that specialists do 12k and 24k services. My service should of included a spark plug change, I was told this did'nt need to be completed.

Correct me if I am wrong here guys but the OPC told me there was now only a 12k service on this car and that included everything.

And tappet adjustment? I only ask as this adds a lot of labour to the bill. (and is a real arse ache DIY)
I got two prices quoted to me from my OPC. One for ~£600 (a so called 12000 mile service) and one for £967 (a so called 24000 mile service including tappet adjustment)
I went to an independent and got the 24000 mile service for about £500.
I'm glad you were happy with the service you got (this is how it should be) and a full OPC service history is impressive.
All you've got to do now is enjoy!
 
This is an interesting post, as I have a 1990 964, with 95K on the clock, which also has a full OPC service history to date. I contacted Edinburgh OPC for a price of the next service and was asked to provide the service book so they could ascertain the service requirement.

The upshot is a "48K" sevice, including tappet check / adjustment, oil and service parts at £683.73 +VAT, this also takes into account the labour rate of £50 for older Porsches and a 10% parts discount for PCGB members.

They have said they need the car for 3 days and when I was there there were a number of "older" Porsches being serviced including an elderly 924.( Not to mention the Ferrari's. lambo's and a Carrera GT awaiting sale.)

I'm still undecided if I will use an Indepentdent or the OPC however, as it's winter I can wait until early next year to decide.

I'd be interested in anyone's view of the servicing of 964's in OPC's.

I think the reason there is a lot of confusion on this subject is that many of the independants seem to make up their own schedules - some quote 6K, 12K and 24K services (JZ Machtech for example). This usually relates to (a) oil change, (b) full service less tappet adjustment and (c) everything. RPM in contrast only quote 6K and 12K, equating to (a) and (c).

The tappet adjustment is the killer as far as labour is concerned - as well as workshop space useage. The oil has to be changed when the engine is hot and the tappets have to be done when it's cold so there is inevitably a long wait between the two. Also, the exhaust has to be removed to do the tappets so a fair bit of messing around.

I think it's essential to get a clear understanding of what the intended service includes (and doesn't include) before comparisons can be made.

I'd also be interested in why an OPC would say a spark plug change "didn't need to be completed". Surely that would imply that there is another level of service where it IS completed!!!

I had to replace the oil hoses on my car and so did the oil and filter change myself at the same time this year, however i got my indy (GCR Central in Leic.) to do the tappets, brake fluid, trans fluid, spark-plugs (I supplied the plugs) and have a look over everything else and give it a little tickle-up..

They ended up replacing the exhaust clamps and seals while they were at it and re-welding one of the silencer mountings, as well as replacing the power-steering fluid and topping up the engine oil; the grand total was £300 inc the dreaded vat whcih I thought was really good value; would make a full service (inc oil and filter) around the 450 mark at a guess..

I'd rather spend my money with someone like that who spend their days working on air cooled porkers, but I if you find a decent OPC and your car has a full OPC history (mine doesn't) then its worth using them..

Having run better quality but cheaply acquired second hand cars for general business use ie 20k+miles per year plus SH Porsches for Wife's use-twixt 3 to 5K ea per year,I consider that regular oil + filter changes,fuel + air filter changes are the vital needs and can be done yourself at low cost.I have always used Bosch multielectrode plugs (the 964 plugs are similar) and in general plugs will last much longer than the service intervals.If you drive the cars with a sensitive ear + feel,you can sense if it's smooth or not,ie does it return to a steady idle,will it smoothly trickle in traffic in 5th,etc and after plug changes,it always seems to take many miles to be as smooth as it was before.Constant fuel consumption checks give early warning of something not being quite right and require investigation if no other reason springs to mind.
So,because I wanted to overhaul the rear brakes on the 964(brake plate lift etc)and want now to do the fronts,it has gone past the usual time for the normal 2yr 12K service at the Indy I use,where I supply the Correct Porsche service kit,which includes the plugs,and Mobil 1 from Costco.
I have been using it every day recently,for all sorts of journeys,whilst the BMW has had new Turbo fitted(don't ask me about it)and am pleasantly surprised how smoothly it is running,so,because of comments above,am not worried about the missing service.

John,at Unit 11 Porsche charged me 7 Hrs labour last time in April 2005 at £35 ph and that included changing the Distr drive belt,fuel filter,gearbox oil.

Has done 12,114 miles since that service,but 2yrs 8mths.

when does transmission fluid need to be changed ? I have seen Porsche recommend at 48,000 mile service.
Is it a mileage issue or age related as well like engine oil ?

As there is such a range of comments and views here 2 things spring to mind :

1. Why not make this a sticky?
2. Why not create a register of 'trusted' or 'valued' indies.

I am sure it is already done and Fred will advise me where. I yet have to gain the Yoda level of enlightenment. Plenty of time. Plan on keeping my 964 for some time.

I will look up my old service bills and post info as well.

I can only speak from personal experience here and please do not take this as gospel (although in the revised edition of that book you may see another gospel added). My Porsches are older models and I'm happy taking them to 'indies' for Porsche related work. We all have our favourite garages and have heard tales of woe about others. What I would reccomend is that you ask members in your region who they use.
I would be happy to reccomend a spray shop for you so that you could get rid of that Indian Pink .[;)][:)]

Got rid of the Pink. Had the car 'treated' earlier this year and it is now glorious red again. (Note to self - change Avatar)
I am also chuffed with indies and have found 'my own' local one (two plus two in Brierley Hill). Just thought it would be good to compile opinions from all of us into a single place and make it available to newbies. Prices would perhaps also be of use. I think £35 per hour is cheap, think I am paying £45. Must check.

I don't have to pray that it stays that way cos it has now had the Permaguard treatment. Would recommend it. £200 for 1st treatment and then £50 each year. Dead easy to wash (just water) and a sponge.

What's this about Porsche centres charging £50 ph for older models. I've never heard this before. What are the criteria, and do all centres offer this? Can anyone tell me more? Thanks.
 
In Newcastle the car must be over 7 years old to qualify for 50% reduction labour costs ( and care probably too ! )
Dont think this is happening at all OPCs yet
 
Is there someone (in PCGB?) who can clarify which centres have this special rate. I am particularly interested in near West London, eg. Reading, Hatfield, London...
